How can anyone really 'hate' an SCD contestant or dancer?

I see the word 'hate' bandied around alot on these forums, and have for years.

I don't really hate anyone I have never met, or even people I have met.

Hate is such an emotive word. My sister told me when I was 10 when I told her I hated her after a row, that 'if you say hate, you mean it.'

Does anyone here really 'hate' any contestants or dancers?

I totally agree with this .

I have one or two Professionals /Celebs who I find irritating or not to my taste , but I've never used the word hate on these forums and never would.

Hate is a very destructive force ,Imo

Irritated at the most here too. Mainly by the dresses because I couldn't get my left leg in one.

I've said this in another thread,....hate is a too strong a word,.....irritated is a better word. I've never met the pro dancers or celebs in real life, so I wouldn't know what their personalities are. I can get irritated with a person because of the way she/he behaves on telly, but hate someone I've never met,....no! That would be ridiculous.

Totally agree with you...... The SCD forum is`t too bad but the word is thrown around like confetti on the Big Brother forum. We don`t know these people so how can we possibly "Hate" them. There are people I know in my own life who I dislike but I hate no one...... Maybe I`v just been lucky in life

I don't think anybody actually seriously hates one of the contestants/pros/hosts. When people say things like that, I think you have to take it in the context of the show, be it Big Brother, SCD or whatever.

With a lot of reality TV, you get very involved with the contestants very quickly. SCD, for example, is on seven days a week now, and BB has live streaming for most hours of the day so it's very easy to get caught up in it and it all moves very fast.

I say I love Anton, and I do really like him, but I don't actually love him, I don't know him. But in the context of the show, I do - he's one of my favourite pros and I enjoy watching him dance or be interviewed on ITT etc. But in the context of the show and the intensity of it (consider how harsh it can get around here sometimes, for example! Nothing compared to the BB boards, but you get what I mean - you find yourself arguing about the silliest little things because it's so intense) then it makes more sense (and that's so not the phrase I want, but eh) to say 'ooh, I love him!' than 'oh well I quite like him really he's rather nice'.

Once the season is over, people will still like who they like and not like who they don't, but it's not as...vehement, I guess? Because you're no longer spending time watching that person seven days a week, so they kind of fall off your radar if you don't like them so it's really of no concern anymore.

Anyway. Just my opinion!

Hear, hear.

I used the term 'hate' in one of my threads but in the context of marmite, you know you either hate it or love it. I didn't mean it in a nasty way, but I belive that in that context 'hate it or love it' is just away of asking for an opinion, of which you get to choose from two polar opposites. So yes I could have said do you like or dislike them, but that wouldn't have made for a very good title!

I agree with the OP too and I have posted the same sentiments on various threads , earlier today I posted exactly this on the thread about Kelly and Brendan .
" Hate " is indeed a very emotive word and not one I think is appropriate for use in the context of boards such as this .

Marmite is very different to a person one hasn't met though...... however I understand what you mean .

Absolutely, quackaquacka. The words hate and love (and a host of others) are bandied about fairly liberally on these forums, but it is naive and foolish to believe that the poster is either physically in love with the celeb/pro or that he/she has feelings of intense dislike for that particular celeb/pro.

For people to get their undergarments in a tangle over this, is in my opinion, silly.

Very well said. I don't like the fact that you cannot go into any of the fan threads and say something even slightly negative without getting lynched.

Thankyou, people have been making me feel bad about my thread when 'hate or love' is just a term to be used, especially in this context. Of course no one on here means it-we don't even know these people!

What I find objectionable is when the term hate is used and then a particular physical "fault " or mannerism is used to underline it

Certain mannerisms are irritating , physical faults may leave you cold , but to say hate ........

Again though , this is just my opinion

I would have to disagree with you here, Paace. I'm all for free speech (within the limits set by DS), but I think there are enough threads, (open a new one if you wish), for fans and others to express whatever maybe on their minds.

Given this, it simply isn't necessary to gatecrash a fan thread to post your opinion. Use the open discussion threads already in use.

But I do agree, that you should be free to post an opinion (be it negative or indifferent) about a pro/celeb without incurring the collective wrath of fans; and having them descend on you like a bunch of murderous Harpies (O.K. I'm exaggerating again, here).

One of my pet 'hates' (yes, I know ) is hyperbole. There's so much of it around it even infects me.

I like the fact that excessive and / or inappropriate use of words like 'hate' are frowned upon in here. All we have is text and a few smilies so everyone should be encouraged to express themsevles unambiguously. We shouldn't expect people to correctly interpret our exaggerations. It's good discipline which can be carried through IRL.

Of course 'love' should be challenged too but rarely is in my experience.

I think most folk on this forum are up for a constructive debate /arguement..........I know my views have changed after seeing others points of view.....but there are some on this forum who are so fanatical about there favourite pro it`s unreal.I like Kelly+ Brendan but I know other members don`t. I certainly would`t hound them out of the debate by deriding their point of view.

I agree that "hate" is too strong a word, and used too often. I do hate it when people do that .

Seriously, we all find different characters irritating, or dislike some parts of their personalities, but they all go towards making a good show.

Or to be accused of bashing and hating

Just went to post something about an article I read on Brendan on one of his threads, thinking it may be of interest to his fans but quickly left again after reading `Brendan haters` in someones post

I think it's clear that some people really do have intense dislike for some of the celebs and others who appear in "reality" shows. Clear from the amount of time and effort devoted to attacking them, the vehemence of some posts, the way faults and bad behaviour are remembered, exaggerated, sometimes conjured out of nothing, often with a complete unwillingness to give any benefit of the doubt, and so on.

(I don't think it's gotten that bad, yet, with this SCD, but it's still early days.)

Whether "hate" is the right word isn't clear, but hate comes in a fair range of degrees. Some people hate broccoli, after all.

The idea that you can't hate someone you haven't met is a new one to me. Where the heck did it come from?

As far as I know I have never used the word hate on the SCD forum. I dislike one pro with a passion, but hate is a waste of energy imo...and as of last night I will always wear my flak jacket when posting in this particular forum. It would appear that one of our None fan type threads have disappeared overnight but can't say that I'm surprised.

While I agree with Sports Fan re the right to free speech, the demonizing of celebs and pros on some of the threads is just downright scary and very sad.

There's always a place for constructive criticism but the bashing and 'hating' that goes on plus the lack of tolerance of other people's opinions is very revealing about the posters themselves. I just thank God they are on DS and not people I actually know.

I wouldn't use the word 'hate' either.

I think all the celebrity contestants on SCD are very plucky for taking part at all.
