The woman at BT Customer services said as the house had no prior history of BT lines being installed, the BT engineer would have to do some work on the exchange, and may have to come in my house. I do already have phone sockets around the house though.

it varys, on what will need to be done at the premises. sometimes 20mins, sometimes days. you will have to wait for what the engineer says when they turn up. you may have sockets already but they might not be connected to anything. happens quite a lot. but the usual work time at the premises is a couple of hours. wether your line will be working that day is another issue. all depends on how the network is feeling and wether she got up on the wrong side of the bed.
