Blu-Ray disappointment

I recently took advantage of the reduced price PS3 and bought one mainly for it's Blu-Ray capabilities.
Having also bought Casino Royale (for me) and Monster House (for my son) on Blu-Ray I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the results. The picture is fine but not as much of an improvement on DVD as I anticipated. Was I expecting too much?
The games which came bundled with the console look amazing and I have to say upscaled DVDs are absolutely stunning (especially CGI movies).
My telly is a 42" LCD 1080i Toshiba which usually churns out a fantastic picture on BBC HD.
So I wondered if anyone else is a bit disappointed with the next-gen DVD? (HD DVD fanboys need not answer).

not sure about monster house but casino royale was never filmed in 1080p so is upscaled. also your set is not 1080p, so is not going to match the native 1080p of the blu-ray player

we have one set up on the new sony 40'' w3000 and the picture is absolutly stunning

OK, so which Blu-Ray title(s) would best show off the format? Dumping my 1080i telly is not an option I'm afraid.

oh of course not thats not what i meant lol. what i meant is clearly a 1080p movie would look better on a 1080p set
the films i have seen in demo that looked very good; talladaga nights-- will ferril, verticle limit looked pretty good aswell. depends on what type of film you like.

Almost no movies are "filmed" in 1080p. Most are still filmed on 35mm film, then scanned in a Telecine machine to create the digital masters for HD and SD DVD's.

It depends how the studio decided to format the film, that Casino Royal may have only been scanned to be 1080i.

Casino Royale on Blu-ray is a 1080p/24 release (as is virtually everything on both HD formats) and uses the H.264 codec and while the movie is considered the pinnacle of HD picture quality it certainly is a good example of what HD can do.

Just remember that real Movies (as opposed to CGI/animation, games) far more so the TV shows are made with a certain "look and feel" by the director and his DP. It may simply be that the greater accuracy of HD in replicating the theatrical release isn't to the OP's taste.

Watch Saving Private Ryan, Miami Vice, War of the Worlds and 300 for examples of HD movies that many would consider not good examples of HD thanks to their production choices.

35mm films are gonna have the grainy effect from the film, just as you would see in the cinema. The best examples would be a film that was digitally mastered. Other than CGI film that would include Star Wars:ROTH if only they would release it on HD...
