Best place for LCD or Plasma TV??
lalaland

Hi all,

I'm moving house and selling my wall mounted 32" LCD TV with the house. So I need a new TV.

I've been shopping around the usual places and might go for a larger size, not too sure if to go for LCD or plasma yet (depends mainly on price), so I need some recommendations on where to shop.

I was looking to spend around £700 but could possibly stretch higher if the model was right.

Any recommendations? I'll be looking to buy in the next 2 or 3 weeks max.

Thanks

Personally, I've found Richer Sounds seem to offer a better deal on all the high street stores and many online places as well.

I've yet to find the Sony 40" LCD I'm interested in cheaper anywhere else. It's £200 more in Sainsburys and Makro have it on the Makro mail this month I think as the same price as Richer plus VAT ....

Bear in mind that Richer Sounds tend to sell a lot of graded stock, which are usually faulty returns that have (hopefully) been repaired.

Makro are never too good once you add the VAT on

The majority of their stuff is brand new, I've used them in the past and they were decent.

From their site -
Quote:
“DO WE SELL SECONDS?
We quite frequently hear of our competitors (who are naturally frustrated at our prices) telling customers that the only reason we are so cheap is that all our goods are either seconds, returns, stolen, counterfeit, second-hand etc... This is, of course, utter nonsense and simply sour grapes on their part! If it were true it would be both illegal and hardly good customer relations - something we assure you we take very seriously. All our stock is brand new in sealed cartons unless clearly stated otherwise.
Last Few To Clear = Stocks limited/not available in all stores. Some may be ex-display or ex-repair at this price (ex-display stock carries a 12 month warranty, ex-repair goods have a 3 month guarantee). GRADED/Factory Repack = Products refer to mail order returns or ex-service products, thoroughly tested and re-sold with a 12 month guarantee. All prices include VAT at 17.5% (Some prices may differ in our stores in Eire due to distribution costs and currency fluctuations.)”

so they do let you know when you buy graded stock from them.

I dislike Makro. It's very rare that I see something that's actually a good bargain with them. Their products are either cheaper quality items or decent items at normal prices. Since a Costco opened near our local Makro I used them and found their prices better and the quality of their goods much higher. The TVs in both don't appear to be saving a great deal though, so I am still shopping around.

I have the 87 version of this TV and it is magnificent. I cannot fault the picture - especially in HD. The HDTVTest site mentioned above has a M86/87 settings thread in its forum which suggests all the best settings - they just make the picture even better!

I got it off a Samsung employee so I cannot recommend a dealer. Although John Lewis is often a good bet due to the free extended guarantees it often offers.

The result....

I got the Samsung 40" 1080p LCD TV and am very impressed with it.

I stuck it on my wall then headed to Richersounds and purchased a Samsung upscaling DVD player and Samsung 6.1 AV receiver and Sony 6.1 speaker package.

On top of that I added Sky+ with full channel package (minus premium sports and films) to give me something to watch on my new system.

This left with me a lot of remote controls and one unhappy wife, so I added the Philips Prestigo SRU 8015 control which controls all the above and for extra geek points also dims and turns on and off my room lights too

I got a bit carried away, but it was certainly well worth it. The TV is great, looks very nice on the wall and unlike my last LCD TV even looks good when it's turned off with it's stylish black appearance and decent design put in by Samsung. The sound is outstanding. Great quality and makes those all in one systems that I've had in the past sound depressing.

The wife didn't appreciate any of this when I set it all up, but then she put MTV on for a while, watched a film and then enjoyed XFactor () and now really appreciates what I've set up

I highly recommend any of the above if anyone's in a similar situation looking for new kit.

I'm waiting a little longer before I go HDDVD / Bluray, but I think that will complete it. And maybe a Sky HD box if any decent offer come around.

I had my Sky HD installed yesterday. Existing Sky+ box moved upstairs and multiroom switched on.

Total cost ... £125. (plus the ongoing subscription costs obviously)

I was quite happy with that given that I thought I was looking at £299 for HD alone when I first looked into it.

The HD content is nice, but limited. I'm working on the assumtion that it can only grow ...

Incidentally, I ended up with the Sony 40" U series LCD ..... from Makro! Their price came in about equal to the best deal I could find online but less hassle if anything goes wrong as it's just down the road from me.

Yeah. that's what puts me off the HD subcription at present, the extra subscription per month and the limited number of HD channels. Once they grow in number I'll go for it.

I bought my LCD from Costco, I like their garauntee on electrical items and they also include a free 3 year warranty on top.
