Samsung 40" or Sony LCD please.

Hi, just wanted any advice or preferences/horror stories about these two sets, Sony KDL-40W2000 or Samsung LE40M87BDX both of which are being superseded & are now available at £798-£840 ish, I know what they can (claim to) do on paper but have not tried either out as I will be buying online & the local shops are no help & just have the same old feed going through them, I know about the freeview issue with Samsung but hopefully thats been resolved with later sets?. Main things I'm after are picture quality, build quality & reliability. Thanks
EDIT: DOH, just realised theres a HDTV sub forum

The KDL40W2000 is a really great set, it's an excellent picture on both SD and HD, and appears to be very reliable - I've never had occasion to repair one yet!.

Thanks for that, we have a 50" Sony Wega LCD rear-projector as our main set, we have had it 3 years or so & no probs, (touch wood) so its good to hear, prior to that we had a Hitachi rear projector which packed in after 18 months & no one could fix it, a waste of £1,600!

I bought the 40W2000 last Christmas. No problems. It only lacks "this year's feature" which is 1080p24. I assume the Samsung lacks the same.

taking delivery of the Samsung LE40M87DDX from play (£829) later in the week it has 1080p and 24Hz for blueray (Read the reviews)

Its now very close to 2008!

The Samsung with blueray 1080@24Hz from a PS3 is excellent so are the games.

The UI is also good.

Yes, but the newer models haven't faired as well in tests. The age of the review doesn't change it

Try their TV selector http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/selector.php and see which TV comes out on top! Almost always the Samsung, Sometimes Sharp, Never Sony.

Although most things are personal preferance and most viewers wouldnt even notice some of the picture attributes anyway.

Or even better buy yourself a copy of What Hi-Fi and read the Buyers Guide at the back.

They say, in last months issue:

Sony KDL40W2000: 5 Stars, Best TV Product of the Year in Awards 2006, beats all the plasmas. (Review based on £1400 cost - now about £850).

samsong LE40M86 (last model?): 5 Stars, Startingly good, competitively priced. (Review based on £1300).

Samsung (not samsung) now LE40M87BDX not m86, perhaps improved. £839 on play, can be got cheaper.

Go and take a look and make up your own mind. Obviously were all biased!

I have had a Samsung LE40M86 since June & can't fault it other than the freeview judder (which did not bother me as I use Sky) However the recent software download has now cured that anyway. Some people have reported Scart Banding & Movie Plus Bug but none of these applied to me. I payed £1050 for the set and dont regret it for a second, Blacks are the best I have seen & the bright detailed screen is truly amazing especially on HD

The M86 is exclusive to Curry's the M87 is all other retailers, the only difference (Confirmed by Samsung) is the the M87 has a chrome plastic strip along the bottom & the M86 strip is gloss black like the rest of the TV.

The latest sets have a newer firmware revision, however mine purchased in June has the older firmware and does not have any of the problems that some people have reported.

Most M86/87 sets suffered from a Freeview judder on the inbuilt tuner, however the recent software download has now cured this issue.

I believe the scart banding occurs when the SKY box is set to RGB, and its an incompatibility between the TV and Box, A different sky box fixes. I had this on my old samsung with a Pace box. An older amstrad box was fine.

Just noticed that there is another Software upgrade today, just installed mine.

Because I didn't know it I didn't look up the Sony, I knew it off the top of my head as we purchased one at work the other day.
