After much thought, I'm going to be buying the Nokia 6300 and I was wondering if you could use the EDGE connection on Orange?

I've used GPRS on my current phone but it's so slow (takes about 15 seconds to load anything).

Provided it's all setup correctly, it should work. My advise however would be to get a 3G compatible phone, which is faster than EDGE and is more future compatible.

To my knowledge, Orange haven't rolled out their EDGE network across the UK fully. I believe (and could be VERY wrong on this) they don't plan to launch it in areas they already have 3G.

Also - is it available to non-business tariffs yet?

But 2G phones and networks will still be around in 2 or 3 years time?

Orange have a fairly widespread EDGE network in none-3G areas.

2G networks will be around for a while yet, but generally the best advise is to get a 3G phone as 3G coverage is continuously being increased, and being a newer technology it's better than GSM/GPRS.

Orange only have EDGE enabled at around 10-15% of their base stations, its not fairly widespread. In N.Ireland its barely available even in places where they have no 3G service in the larger towns there's no EDGE service.

I'm N.Ireland, Outside Cookstown and my SE 810i changes over to edge sometimes, but its a disaster when it does, calls drop, WAP doesn't work etc etc

Prehaps you could consider something like the Nokia 6280 which supports both EDGE and 3G. That way you have the best of both worlds. I have the Nokia 6280 myself and it's a great phone for 3G, I can't say how well EDGE works however as I'm on Vodafone.

I live in an area which can get 3G from Orange, yet a few months ago I started getting EDGE on my phone so they must have started enabling it in 3G areas as well.

I just read a review of the Nokia 6280 and it only got 2/5.

What review is that, would be interesting to read, as I have absolutely no complaints about the phone. I know it originally had dodgy firmware, but Nokia has since rectified it so all the ones on the market now shouldn't have the original problems.

I go to this site every time I want to find out about a handset.

The only places I've seen "E" come up on the screen for me while on Orange's network has been in Lisnaskea (?) and along the M1 outside Lurgan/Portydown. Haven't been up around Cookstown for a while so can't comment, but there is definitely no coverage in Omagh.

Oh I see. Interestingly, the problem they state with unreliability (which is what I assume knocked down the star rating) is the problem that was fixed in the current firmware version, as admittedly before the update the phone did like to constantly reboot itself.

What's Vodafone 3G like?

Why did you choose Vodafone over 3 or Orange?
