You cant get a broadband service without having a BT line. but my question is. With broadband being everywhere and voip becomeing more popular there seems little point in having a bt landline.
Why do BT insist that someone have an active landline just for broadband and not use the landline service. VOIP is cheaper and easier to use than BT.
Does anyone know if its possible to get broadband (not cable) without paying for a landline number that would never get used?

You misunderstand how broadband works.

(Ignoring cable and wireless broadband - neither necessarily cheaper options)

For the first step, from your premesis to the exchange, it uses your landline.

Obviously you must have a connection for the signal to use, and this is your landline. Through clever filtering you can also attach a phone and use it at the same time a broadband, but it doesn't cost BT a farthing less to provide the connection just because you choose not to attach a phone to it.

I was VoIP only for 2 years.

I didn't have a landline.

I'm a cable customer and broadband is delivered differently.

The only reason I now have a cable line (previously had BT line as cable for phone line is a rip-off - the dearest around) is cable didn't want to lose me as a customer when I called to cancel my services as they wouldn't extend my offer for another year again, so they gave me free install of a phone line, free line rental, free evening and weekend package and free caller display, and discounts on my other services.

Now I use Cable Phone for the free calls and VoIP for the other calls.
