I think to be fair he's trying to make the best of what he's got - he and Lilia know that he can't do the 'tall, dark and brooding' thing so he's better off doing something completely different. I don't vote for him, but I admire his focus and I think that his reaction to the scores was more disappointment and fear of the public vote than anger.
It was a bit awkward, though, I thought, in the men's group dance, when he shown in the film not liking the messing about and then in the dance he was the one slapping the girls and punching the air, which did all feel a bit fake because of the contrast. But presumably that was what the dancers asked him to do.
