I got more into the dancing on SCD this year, previously I preferred the training etc. I've loved skating for years but find the DOI format can be a bit tedious - the adverts and T&D saying supportive things about each pair after they've skated - nice but dull & repetetive!

Adore SCD - prefer the live music (even though it can be dodgy!), the judges, the costumes, the pros, the variety of the dances, the calibre of the celebs, the lack of ad breaks... If it weren't for Torville and Dean, I'm not sure I'd watch. I'm not ruling out the chance of someone taking my eye and really getting to enjoy the series, but it hasn't happened yet, though I do admire the skill they have to learn. I'm afraid I tend to treat DOI as something to wean me off SCD!

I love SCD far more that DOI, I will be watching DOI though, I said I wouldn't start watching it this year because it takes up so much of my time but as it is on Sunday's, that suits me as I will have Saturdays free again.

I'm a complete Strictly nut, I've never missed a single programme from Series 1 on but I like DOI as long as they dont clash.

But I dont get as obsessed with it as I do with Strictly, possibly because there's more behind the scenes gossip with Claudia on ITT.

I think it does appeal to an older audience though, as I used to adore Big Brother, Pop Idol 1 and Fame Academy. Now I couldn't care less if I never saw another X Factor/BB show again. I've outgrown them and I loathe the manipulation and desperation of the wannabees.

I would also never vote either, even if 25p or whatever goes to charidy which means I cant get upset by whoever gets booted out.

Even when I don't like Strictly I still love it, there just seems more to it. The live band, 12+ different dances, you get to know the pros, ITT. I also prefer that most of the celebs on SCD are not repeat reality TV stars.
T+D and much better judges (shame they got rid of Natalia) add to DOI's appeal though.

I was quite rude about Strictly earlier in this thread but I did find myself warming it to it towards the end of the recent series. Especially beacause this years X Factor was so boring and the outcome was such a farce, I made sure I voted 20 odd times for Alesha to make sure that the right person won

I still think I prefer DOI though as I find its more dangerous and challenging.

I am a fan of both but DOI is my favorite.

SCDing lost its appeal for me this year after Gethin went out and all the boards G followers got so nasty about Matt Di. It sort of left a nasty taste. I have never seen any nastiness like that on DOI.

I love Gareth but also like Greg (am a keen tennis fan) so I am torn in 2 until I see them on the ice and can decide which one to follow

So why do I love DOI... but find SCD one of the most depressing experiences it is possible to have?
DOI is bright and shiny... the set positively shimmers as if it's Christmas every day.
The pros and the judges have as much charisma and appeal as the celebs.
And it moves at a much faster pace. (presumably cause you move faster on skates than on foot!)

SCD is full of dark, autumnal colours that depress me. When they all come out at the beginning, to that slow version of the theme music, it's like a funeral march...
And the sight of someone like Willie Thorne togged up in a penguin suit, waltzing some girl round with a stupid fake smile on his face convinces me that there truly is no point to life...
My housemate loves both shows, and while I lap up Satdy nights in watching DoI, I feel I'm gonna have to stay out after work till Christmas to avoid the spirit crushing experience of SCD. It's a horrible programme.

Is it just me then?”

Its strange, but I could almost make similar arguments, but in reverse. I love SCD but find DOI tacky and uninteresting

I love both. Probably preferred DOI in previous years as I only watched SCD as and when, but loved SCD this year.

But I absolutely worship Torvill and Dean so that gives DOI a bit of an edge; plus up til this year, DOI always had Defrosted as well which I loved.

No, I've never watched SCD. Not normally a fan of these sorts of shows but got kinda hooked on this one last year - it's the actual skating element that appeals to me.

I'm a huge Strictly fan for all the usual reasons - glamour, sparkle, skill, Nicole, you know...I used to avoid DOI because I thought it was a cheap rip-off of the format but I got interested last year when I saw T+D dancing to 'Shine' and then I got hooked watching that little Clare (Buckfield?) getting bashed and bruised in training and then coming out on a Saturday and being dazzling.

I reckon the important qualities of both shows are that they both require serious committment to master difficult skills and both are populated by people who are successful in their own right and who are not trying to raise their profile just to stay in the spotlight. As soon as you turn them over to sub-celebrities (like BB contestants) you'll be in trouble.

I hope they don't lose the magic formula for these shows by tinkering at the edges too much.

The thing that both shows have in common is that they encourage People to take up a new skill. I have heard People on SCD say that the Dance studios are full of people wanting to learn to dance and also Jayne Torvill said that a lot more people are learning to skate...So if it gets people off their bums and excersising it can't be a bad thing!

No i grew to dislike SCD quickly and do not watch it anymore. I don't like Ballroom Dancing or Bruce Forsythe so it's almost impossible for me to watch. I dislike the way shows like Breakfast suck up to the celebs and the dancers on almost a daily basis on the show in the autumn.

I used to go ice skating when I was young and always enjoyed it . The ice rink in Bristol seemed to me one of the few special and exciting places to go to in the area .

Some of that old ice magic seems to be present there in the show DOI. Also there's the element of danger with the ice. Watching Kay put a dent in her face last year was a scary even fightening but also exciting too as she battled on.

Apart from Jason the judges aren't a bad bunch so i find it hard to find any big faults in the show

Just found this thread.

I have always liked DOI, and never really liked SCD, and my friend is the other way round. Hehe we often argue with each other as to why each is better

I like the presenters on DOI more than SCD. I find brucie a bit OTT (sorry to any big fans) but he does the same sort of thing all the time and for me it gets boring.
I also like the judges more, well ok not keen on Jason but the others always seem lovely and often seem to have a bit of a laugh but still give the skaters tips and comments that are needed.

The main thing i like best, it may be a silly thing to some people, but its the studio. I love the DOI studio, its bright, looks extremely professionals, the lighting, camera work, the judges section, the 'talking' section (the bit where the skaters go after the performance) and the holding area (the bit where the skaters go after their performance) and also the entrance where the skaters come out from is good.
I also love how the ice rink floor in lit from underneith and they can put all sorts of patterns on it without a load of shadows everywhere.

With SCD, for me personally it all feels a bit dark and cheap. For me it feels like a good looking school hall with the stage in the middle and a load of chairs round the outside for the kids to sit on (i know they do have more seats but you don't get to see them much). Also the judges bit (i don't know if they do this in professional dancing, sorry if they do) but when they are scoring, they just show the score on a paddle (like i said, i don't know if they do this all the time, if they do then its ok) but it doesn't look great, whereas DOI have little screens, and we see it on our tv screen first.

In SCD some of the professionals seem to have become big heads now whereas in DOI they don't take the spot light.

I know because i don't really watch SCD much now i may have got some things wrong, i know DOI much better

I also love Chris and Jayne, they come across so lovely, SCD doesn't have anyone like that, no one to perform a really good routine at the beginning.

Oh i also like the theme song better

i much prefer dancing on ice! i am sick to the back teeth of SCD, it is so over exposed and its bugs me so much when the celebs like chambers act as though there life depends on winning it! its over the top! sick of it!

i find DOI a much classier show (except for jasons crap comment about todd) and its not in ya face as much and a little more friendly and laid back which are good things!

I enjoy both, but generally prefer SCD. I like the behind the scenes stuff, and the fact that you get to know the celebs/pros better, and I love the pro dances in the results show.

I love them both, but strictly probably has the edge for me. The celebs have far more personality than those on DOI, has Andrei ever spoken??? The men are like blocks of ice. I agree about the music on strictly, wish they would ditch that.

And with strictly you do get It takes two each evening where they interview the judges, dancers etc which makes it more interesting.

I have always been a SCD fan from the outset and have never really got into DOI. Its amazing how people see things differenty-personally I always think of DOI as the cheap imitation and afterthought. I was one of the 23 million that watched and cheered Torville and Dean in live competition, but I have never understood the ongoing devotion to them that is so obvious when reading these threads.
Each to their own I guess.
