PS3 or XBOX360 as source for Pioneer 507XD
001
21-10-2007
Just bought a Pioneer 507XD

Can anyone give me some practical guidance on use of a game console (XBOX 360 or PS3) as a source please.
(i) can either play standard DVD's?
(ii) does HD-DVD or Blu Ray have best range of films?
(iii) does the PS3 use radio or infra red controllers (the box will have to sit in a seperate room to TV so I need to work out what equipment I will need to test/buy)
(iv) Does anyone know if the bluetooth controller for PS3 works well/through solid walls?
(v) any other tips on setup of console/screen?

Thanks for any help

I don't have either console, so I expect someone else will be able to give you more precise advise, but with regard to the best range of films...

In UK shops you'll find approx twice as many Blu-ray titles. However, Blu-ray discs are region coded, whereas HD-DVDs are region free. This means that if you are prepared to buy from a US source such as Amazon.com, not only will you have a much wider range and cheaper prices but you can also pick up many discs way ahead of their UK release.

The PS3 has Blu-ray built in, whereas you have to buy an add-on drive for the Xbox 360 to play HD-DVDs, but I'm pretty sure both consoles will play vanilla flavoured DVDs straight out of the box. I'm sure I'll be corrected very swiftly if that's not the case.

Quite a few blu rays are multi-region too!

Hi, I can only quote on a PS3, try the gaming forums if you need more info.
(i) Yes the PS3 can play standard DVDs
(ii) I think the other posters have given you good links, from personal experience it seems Blu Ray currently has the edge (just got Spiderman 3 and 300 on BR)
(iii) the standard ps3 dvd controller is infra red.
(iv) Hmm never used it but it would suffer the same restrictions as any other bluetooth device
(v) Mine is connected directly via HDMI running at full 1080p and Blu Ray looks amazing (easily the best way to connect, dont bother with any other type)

Any other questions please ask and I will do my best to answer...

I have a 360
(i) It can, but its VERY loud & distracting! However if its in a different room anyway that may not be a problem.

Yes I know the standard controllers are, I think he meant the standalone DVD controller (sorry dont have one, but oh yes just looked it up and thats BT too..so cant see any issues with it being in another room).
