I agree with saggy. I find some of the comments being made on this Forum offensive. I think that the majority should exert pressure to stop it. saggy has made a good start. There shouldn't be threads that need to be avoided.

Completely agree This forum was such an unexpected pleasure to me - lovely people with interesting views, and no nastiness whatsover. Its been a bit scarey how that has changed over the last few weeks and I, for one, just want it to go back to how it was!

Of COURSE we all have opinions and differing views - that's cool; its just the way we express those that is key. In a cheerful, polite and respectful way (the default mode of most SCD forumites) or in a mean, nasty, personal and spiteful way (which has been slowly creeping in on some threads of late)

The most horrible thing is, is that the more spite and nastiness is used, the more it becomes the 'norm' and people begin to say awful things that they would never normally or previously have done!

I'm not a particular fan of Kelly and I nearly found myself posting something mean, but did actually stop myself as I realised I was getting dragged down into 'Nasty Forumitis' Its like all bitchiness, gossip and bullying - the more you immerse yourself in it, the more you tolerate things you would never normally tolerate.

I think one of the key differences between when SCD is actually on screen, and when it isn't, is the sheer volume of utter garbage and 'non'-news that we get in all the silly tabloids and even sillier 'celeb mags'. Heaven forfend that this lovely forum should just become an extension of those ghastly journals. We're all better than that !!

Hey, and back off the 'appreciation' threads - they are there for a good reason, no matter how 'old' they are. They do no harm to anyone and are usually delightful, if of no interest whatsover to those who don't share the same 'appreciation'. This is where most of the silly unpleasantness has all started!

I completely agree, but I don't think that Saggy is just doing this because of Brendan. It has all got too much over the last few weeks

James isn't my fav cup of tea, but I have enjoyed some of his dances this year and some of the VT's with Gabby.

This is exactly what you and other posters are insisting on. In your world filled with pink and fluffiness, who is to be the arbiter of what is defined as nasty and what isn't? If it is you and others who agree with you, then isn't this a form of censorship??

If I wish to post something that is purely my subjective opinion about a pro or celeb, but is less than flattering, why shouldn't I be able to post this?? Is my negative opinion any less valid than a positive judgement posted by someone else??

As for the nastiness, this again is your subjective assessment. And to repeat my arguement is that your opinion should hold no greater weight than that of any other poster.

DS has extensive guidelines on how these threads should be conducted. Anything posted, that adheres to these guidelines is O.K. and anything that doesn't should, quite correctly, be removed.

And I again repeat, the simplest solution is to stay out of those threads you are not happy with.

I did this as I was hearing from others that it wasn't just Brendan.
We on the Brendan thread are used to it,although we don't like it, we deal with it and move on,but as I had been hearing it had spread to other threads I felt it was time to make my point and ask for politnress to return.

The reason SCD is so popular is because we all have favourites and there is no need to knock them or their supporters in horrid ways,nicely would do!!lol.

And Sports Fan,fair enough.I repsect your opinion,so you just keep doing what you do and I'll just keep sticking to my usual threads and not spend so much time on DS.Luckily for me more friends in my non virtual life have started watching SCD this year,so I can chat to them.I started on here last year to enjoy chatting to people who enjoyed the show like I do but that is not what I am getting from DS this year.And it was just a rant/request...

If you have a negative opinion about a contestant and you wish to make an aggressive post regarding them then it is your right, if it makes you happy then get on with it. But the personal aggressiveness to other posters who do not agree, is not on.

Thus the personal attack... If I find the link I could send it to you and you can see why it annoyed me so much (something on the line that Bruno could never make his uncle proud blah blah, he'll take him to court for helmet rights and so on)...

That's exactly it It's the personal aggressiveness, often implicit in quite a few posts, that is absolutely not on - unnecessary and unpleasant.

PS - saggy, you're fab - I've always thought so If that's construed as cliquey so be it (Even tho' we've never shared the same thread before!)

And there isn't, is there? It's not the Politics Forum. It's a discussion forum about a family show being done in the name of charity, for lighthearted entertainment, glamour and fun, and it's also for people who are already afficianados.

We don't want it to end up like the Showbiz Forum. I recommend that one if you enjoy nastiness.

As a matter of interest, does anyone know if any member has ever been banned from The DS site, as a result of a comment made on the SCD forum......I also noticed that the thread "The problem with fan based threads " was deleted by the moderators a few days ago. It was pointed out to myself by a long standing member, in a private pm, that they thought this may have been the first ever thread to have been deleted by the mods from the SCD forum on DS. Is this true ??

As far as DS rules go, I've only just noticed the 'POSTING TIPS' (and yes, it says TIPS not RULES, I know there's a difference). The second one, "Please treat other users with respect", is pretty much key to how I feel about this.

Personally I do not like the 'hate' type threads or the personal attacks on celebs, dancers, judges or presenters. But of course, everyone is entitled to say what they want within the guidelines.

I'm generally inclined to thinking people should do and say what they want so long as it doesn't harm others. There's no physical harm going on but when people make posts that are clearly going to result in nastiness..what good does it do anyone? This is the internet, there are some rather pathetic people who enjoy upsetting people and not fitting in with the general atmosphere of certain forums. Of course, one can avoid threads that are clearly going to be like that, then everyone's happy. What cannot be so easily avoided is when the trolls post in threads that have been around for ages and have established norms.

Tip#3 "Please ensure your reply is constructive and adds to the discussion." - Personal attacks don't really do anything constructive or add anything.

Of course no-one can force anyone to behave in a certain way, nor would I want that to happen. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking for posters to have respect for each other and be polite - that doesn't mean you can't have opinions, or that you cannot disagree with anyone..it just means being constructive rather than just rude & nasty.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I joined earlier in the year and have been lambasted for stating a positive opinion about a former contestant by someone who did not share that opinion, have come in for personal attacks aimed at me and my opinion, and I have also received a very unpleasant PM from someone who did not agree with my (fairly mildly stated) opinion regarding a certain professional. I am still here because I will not be bullied off a free forum.

It is, however, down to the idividual participants to behave responsibly and stick to the guidelines and Ts & Cs of DS.

It has not always been pink and fluffy either. I first started reading this stuff way before I joined in series 3, and was quite shocked at some of the defamatory and possibly libellous posts. It put me off joining in at the time, I can tell you! Now the series has started again a lot of the same ugliness has come out of the woodwork, though I'm glad to say I haven't seen it as bad as back then (yet!).

I believe free and considered opinions and open debate should be encouraged, but respect for one another should be paramount in all aspects of life, not just a virtual one!

I seem to remember a few months ago, someone started a thread along the lines of SCD is utter cr*p and why would anyone want to watch it. Within a very short time it was removed because quite a few people (myself included) pressed the alert button and reported it. I didn't post on it 'cos this person was obviously just trying to wind people up.

I didn't see that, but those sort of threads are so utterly pointless..people with too much time on their hands. It is of course, their right to have that opinion, but I don't see the point of posting that sort of thing here..and so, logically, I don't see the point of people posting in a thread which is blatantly a support/appreciation/fan thread if they have something negative to say. Well, I do see the point, if the point is being a troll.

As a lurker last year I can definitely agree with that point.
