Dolly without a doubt. After all she wrote it so she should be able to sing it as it should be sung without all the embellishments!

Dolly for me too. There's such an understated quality about it that shines throughout the song.
Whitney's version is also good but a bit OTT at times, not like Dolly minds. "Whitney made me millions!".

Dolly, without a doubt.
![]() This comparison is a brilliant example of less being more, I find Whitney's version so OTT, I can't listen right through to the end if it comes on the radio. |

Dolly, no contest. Linda Ronstadt does a good version too, closer to Dolly's version than Whitney's, obviously.

Dolly. Whitney, apart from the wailing, seems to miss the point of the song.

IMO if you prefer Whitneys you've never heard Dollys.

Dolly can make you cry with that song. So can Whitney, for very different reasons.

Dolly's!!
Whitney, like many other singers of her kind, totally strangles every note. |

Dolly's version is much better. Her version seems to understand the point of the song more (breaking up with someone)- however she wrote it, so of course she understands it better.
Whitney Houston has a great voice though, and her version made a great deal of money for Dolly Parton, as Dolly Parton herself has said many times.
