Freeview Playback on the TF5800

I'm wondering how long we're going to have to wait for this software update: 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, a year?

Sometime after the Topfield subforum front page is filled with threads started by ianmoticon

As a complete stab in the dark, 6 months after the 5810 is released. That gives the new model time to become established and for the FP bugs to be ironed out without having to merge the fixes across multiple branches of source code.

Of course, I'm not Topfield so that figure is almost certainly completely wrong.

Er, this is actually now the ianmoticon subforum.

If this is to do with firmware updates for the TF5810, there are some clues/pointers in the appropriate thread on the toppy forum, as well as the appropriate news item on same forum. But then again the OP would not be interested in that, preferring instead to start yet ANOTHER thread in order to continue his one-man crusade against Topfield with some barbed comments, and distortions of the facts no doubt.

And Freeview Playback itself? MyStuff TAP gives some a very good alternative way of providing many of the functions, and is quite possibly more powerful (especially the NextGen release). Some of the functions of Playback are very much dependant upon the broadcasters getting the 14-day epg operative, and when some (like ITV this morning with no EPG data for 29th and 30th Oct on ITV1 and ITV2) seem to have trouble providing the information for a 7-day epg, I really do begin to wonder how useful some of the Playback features will be when some broadcasters can't get it right now .....

I'm wondering how long we're going to have to wait for you to explain how the TUTV Anytime box automatically skips adverts.

I'd best pull up a comfy chair then.

When you consider that ITV cocked up the EPG info for the Rugby World Cup final coverage on ITV1 (it was still called Coronation Street up to the start of the broadcast [1]) I will be treating FP features with the same disdain as PDC.

[1] Yes I did an ITV1 EPG rescan just before - I had the sense to have already changed it to a fixed recording and recorded both ITV1 and ITV4 from 7:30pm onwards.

It is a tad disconcerting when Freeview Playback is being toted as "the next big thing" and boated about by some manufacturers, when in reality some of the benefits rely on the broadcasters who have a rather bad track record with the current EPG. Even SeriesLink metadata is problematic, even from the BBC (who I think have been transmitting said data the longest, and should have got it sorted by now).

I'll stick with MyStuff Control Timers and MEISearch for now, and MyStuff NextGen for the future (with its many additional facilities and search features) until we see better support from the broadcasters.

Yes, far better to record too many episodes of a programme than too few.

It appears lots of people don't have faith in Freeview Playback.

Cheers. I'm glad it's appreciated but it's hard work! I wish others would contribute. Come on guys!

Probably more faith than you explaining how the TUTV Anytime box automatically skips adverts.

It was the 3rd place playoff wasn't it? I thought my Toppy needed resetting. I did the full power off/on/rescan/reload and it still thought Corrie was on for three hours!

Ah yes, sorry. Yes it was the Friday eveing play-off that had the problem. TBH as I was working that evening I would have been happy with a one hour highlights show to wind down to but this was a prime example of ITV's inconsistent provision of such over the course of the tournament.

Annoyingly, earlier in the week the EPG entry for that period had had Rebus in it - UKAS set me a timer for that - so they obviously did update the data, to remove Rebus, but them simply extended Coronation St.

No shareholder value in getting it right, presumably.

Presumably though, that will change as more people come to rely on this data during the digital switchover. So if they don't get their EPG data right then their advertisers don't get viewed (Obviously if people have ad skip then the ads won't be viewed anyway).

Correct, we would hope anyway. But obviously it is not seen as a priority for ITV as regards the poor souls living in Whitehaven though.

So quite how does that ad-skip feature work on the TUTV Anytime box that you mentioned a while back?
