XBox 360 - vga cable and dolby 5.1

Hi,

I am a little confused and somewhat peeved and I hope one o you kind and knowledgable people can help.
I have just received my XBox 360 (not set up yet), and due to advice on this forum bought a vga cable for it (my HDMI slot being used by Sky HD and Component slot by my DVD player). This is the VGA cable I bought, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-VGA...3137233&sr=8-1. The tech spec says it does Dolby 5.1, but when I open it to give it a look see, I see no optical cable, just the red and white audio connectors. Forgive my feeble knowledge of audio connectivity but I thought this was just stereo.
Have I been duped or will this cable do Dolby 5.1?

Thanks for your assistance.

Looks like a poorly advertised product to me, as you have stated, the phonos are for stereo not DD5.1. By rights it should have an optical cable.

You will need something like this........

Or purchase the two leads separately.

Personally I would return it and purchase the correct item from somewhere else, PC world for example, it's cheaper as well.

Or get the official Microsoft one.. only £5 more than the madcatz one, but at least you know it does the job (comes with optic cable, RF to 3.5mm jack converter and female to female adapter) Stop being tight and get a proper one

It does dolby 5.1 in that you can plug an optical cable into the end of the cable that plugs into the 360.

I definitely would not recommend getting that mad catz cable however. I have both, and the madcatz one is not shielded and will give you an inferior picture to the official Microsoft one.

The one he has IS the official microsoft one. I don't know if they have changed it since I bought one, but it doesn't come with an optical cable but those are easy enough to pick up.

Thank you, oh wise and sage DS readers
I knew you would have the details. I now see the socket for the optical cable on the end of the vga cable, it's so obvious when you know what you're looking for

I will go get an optical cable just now. will make do with stereo until then...

cheers,
S.
