Playing music on Samsung Phones

Hi folks.

I'm a bit of an old Luddite when it comes to mobile phones, but I've just decided to treat myself to a 'modern' phone and purchased the new(ish) Samsung J600 from Virgin. Bit of a bargain at £49 and overall I've been very impressed with it.

As it supports microSD cards, I bought a 2GB one (can't believe how cheap memory is these days!) as I thought I could use the phone as an occasional replacement for my hard-disk MP3 player.

However, I have since discovered that the phone has some serious limitations when it comes to playing music. Basically, you can only play one track at a time (i.e. it doesn't continue to the next track after it finishes the first) unless you create a playlist. That might not be too bad, but it only supports 4 playlists, the songs in the playlist must be in the root of the music folder (i.e. not in sub-folders, organised by albums) and as far as I can tell you can only have 30 tracks in a playlist.

So all in all, not a very practical alternative to a dedicated mp3 player.

Can anyone tell me if this is standard with Samsung (or indeed any other make of) phones? Is there any chance that Samsung will release an update to correct these deficiencies? I can't be the only person who finds this a pain. Or am I?

Hi smspro,

No, don't worry, you're not the only one!

I got the Samsung J600 last December, free, when I took up the Virgin £10/Month 100+100 deal.

Overall, I'm pleased with the phone, but I was disappointed with the functionality of the MP3 player and it would be great if there were to be a firmware upgrade to sort this out.

I don't think this is true of all Samsung phones, as my Sister has recently got a G600 (I think?) and when I was having a quick look around the menus etc. I noticed that in the Music Player there were references to Albums, Artists, Genres etc. so that looks like it reads the ID Tags and sorts the music correctly.

Correct, although I think their functionality (up to D900 at least) is rather limited, also, sound quality is worse than a very cheap solid state MP3 player (the type you get in ASDA for a tenner).

Nokias that I have had have always had half decent sound quality, and I've had both a Sony Ericsson K800i, and the Walkman branded Sony Ericsson W880i, which both have pretty good sound qualit for a mobile. The MP3 player in the W880i lets you do all sorts of cool things like upload album art, playlists etc. and the sound quality and interface is very nicely designed.
