Will the UK ever get PTT?
I think the PTT (push to talk/transmit) facility offered to american customers is really good.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_to_talk Do you think UK networks will ever allow this facility? Last edited by halewood : 25-10-2007 at 08:44. Reason: spelling |

iirc the US market never really got into SMS before PTT arrived so that took the market, the UK on the other hand SMS has always been there.
There are phones with it in the UK, but people will rather use SMS |

I'm not sure if there's really much demand for such a service in the UK. Anyone who has tried using PMR446 and CB will know that the channels are usually dead (or occupied by some moron playing crappy music), and both of those services are available for free using relatively inexpensive transceivers.
PTT on the other hand is usually a subscription service (or included as part of a subscription) and the reach is only as far as a single cell transmitter allows - probably no more than a radius of five miles. The one advantage that PTT does have over PMR446 and CB however is that you can lock out the arseholes playing music by creating contacts lists on your phone and restricting your broadcasts to those people instead. |

T-Mobile tried PTT in the UK a few years ago, but it didn't really take off.

I asked Vodafone about this when it forst come out and they told me if was too expensive for them to use and then they would put the charge on the user and that was the reason they were not going to implement it. Not sure about now though as it was a few years ago I think.
