ADSL2 16Mb or 24Mb Broadband Internet Speeds on Tiscali / Homechoice
HomechoiceW12
27-10-2007
Does anyone know if Tiscali (Ex Homechoice) have any plans to launch ADSL2 services enabling us to get broadband internet speeds of up to 16Mb or 24Mb?

Sky already offer theses speeds on it's own network. Also other providers such as 02 / Be, UKonline, C&W Bulldog have these speeds on offer.

Be great to be able to get these speeds!

when I had Homechoice installed last year the engineer tested the line to find the top speed and said that it was 24mb, so they must have the technology installed they just need to activate it.

The TV may be a bit a drain on services and so they may not want to offer higher speeds if they can't provide them

The TV takes 3Mb or so.

What is needed is for the STB and the DSLAM to support ADSL2+ operation. Ibelieve that all the STBs do but that not all of the DSLAMs have been upgraded.

It's also more about backhaul capacity at each exchange - which Tiscali have always scrimped on, so don't hold your breath...

Tiscali UK launches new 16 Mb ADSL 2+ product
London, 17th January 2008 - Tiscali today announces the launch of its new high-speed ADSL 2+ service, offering customers an up to 16Mb broadband connection for just £17.99 a month. The next-generation service will be bundled with a free evening and weekend calls package, with further packages incorporating the Tiscali TV service to be introduced soon.

The service will initially launch to existing Tiscali customers on 650 exchanges around the country. Customers who can receive the ADSL 2+ product will be contacted as the service rolls out and will be able to upgrade online in the ‘my account’ area on the Tiscali portal www.tiscali.co.uk . As part of a phased roll out, ADSL2+ be made available to new customers from February, who will be told as part of the registration process whether the service is available to them and also as part of the TV triple play bundle packages for existing and new customers.

Steve Horley, managing director of Tiscali’s consumer division, says: “Not only can customers on ADSL 2+ expect a faster service; they can also expect a more stable one. ADSL2+ also means we can offer higher speeds to more people. ADSL 2+ is capable of up to 24Mb, those very close to the telephone exchange can expect to get very fast service and those who have previously only experienced the lower end 2 or 3 Mb will be able to get an improved service. It will also mean that we can bring our TV service to even more customers as the normal threshold to support TV is 3.2Mb.”

Its usually around 1Mb. With Be its 2.5mb (claimed. one of my employees gets 1Mb), Sky 768K. Until we get it installed we won't know for sure.

Is there any update on this? There's still nothing about it on the Tiscali website. Has it been shelved until the company finds a new owner?

The ADSL2+ platform is still being trialled, when available it will only be for our LLU fotprint, it is on the development map however, and hopefully will be deployed early next year.

Thanks Chris. Are there any plans to use the increased available bandwidth to deliver extra features for the TV service, or at this stage is it just extra speed for the Internet?

Hi,

the development of ADSL2+ and additional enhanced TV features are two seperate development plans, I'm not privy to when and what the latter will entail.

So another year has passed and still no news. Is this ever going to appear?

I'd love 16mb, but I called Tiscali just the other day and asked if I could speed up my (supposed) 8mb - (only actually get 4mb, I understand why but would like to get more and would pay).
Tiscali said that I could have faster broadband, but would then lose my telly service. This I don't understand? Surely more bandwidth is good for the telly with more spare for internet rubbish.
Can someone explain? If I'm not able to get more than 8mb for broadband then ADSL +2 seems fairly unimportant.

Tiscali have offered an ADSL2+ service for some time, providing your exchange supports it. It's just they haven't tied it into their TV delivery systems.

Link

To be honest the complete lack of support and development from the company (even under the new owners) towards the TV service is making me doubt whether I want to remain with it. I mean, come on, it's been two years since this question was first raised and there's been no progress whatsoever. TalkTalk would complain that there aren't enough TV subscribers, yet refuse to advertise the service even using cheap Web ads. How do they expect to pick up customers if virtually nobody knows it's there?

An ADSL2+ TV system would be the perfect thing for TalkTalk to differentiate themselves from other general ISPs and seriously compete with Sky and Virgin. Most of the infrastructure is already there, but without the corporate will it will continue to languish until it finally dies.

Couldn't agree more!

Tiscali do not seem to understand that a good cliffhanger depends on the storyline progressing from episode to episode, nor do they realise that most of their customers are too old for fairy stories.
