Have just got Freesat from Sky, but can't work out how to connect up the Skybox, DVDR & TV so I can record from Freesat. I appreciate there are loads of these requests already, and I've printed off a few and tried, but without success. I'd be grateful if someone could advise me on how to connect the following:

Panasonic TV: 2 Scart sockets (AV1 & AV2) and a standard aerial socket

Panasonic DVDR: 2 scart sockets (AV1 [TV] and AV2 [Ext]), RF out, RF in.

Freesat Skybox: 2 scart sockets (VCR & TV); Aerial in, RF Out 1, RF Out2. Obviously, the cable from the dish is also connected to the Skybox!

Although I can still watch BBC1, 2, ITV & Channel 4 received by my normal TV aerial, I don't need to necessarily, as I can get everything via the dish.

In some of the other posts on this subject I've seen advice about using the AV button, or setting things to RGB. This isn't something I currently know much about, so please use short words!

Thanks.

TV Aerial to DVDR Aerial in
DVDR RF Out to TV Aerial in.
Note...the TV aerial does not need to be plugged in to the Sky boxes Aerial in...unless you want to take the RF Out from the Sky box to another TV in a different room.
Sky "TV Scart" to DVDR AV2
DVDR AV1 to TV AV1
Sky "VCR Scart" to TV AV2
Set the Sky digibox to output RGB from the "Services", "Picture Settings", "Video Output" menu...also make sure "Scart Control" is set to "ON" and set the aspect ratio to 16x9 if you have a widescreen TV...or 4x3 if your TV is a 4x3...don't forget to "Save new Settings" if you make any changes within this menu.
Set the DVDR AV2 input to RGB and AV1 output to RGB.
To record whatever is showing on Sky select the "A2" input using the DVDRs "input" button.
While the DVDR is recording Sky you can watch a terrestrial channel by using the TVs remote to select TV followed by the programme no button...1,2,3,4 etc.

Thank you very much for the walk- through. It's now working, which is wonderful. One question, though - as you advised, when setting something to record I change, for example, 'ITV' to 'AV2' if I want to record ITV from the digital signal. Trial and error seems to imply, as does your message, that you have to actually set the Skybox to the channel you want to record - ie, that the DVDR looks to 'AV2', and 'AV2' will be whatever the Skybox is set to. Is this correct? If so, this means that you can't go on holiday and set recordings over a week on different channels. This isn't the end of the world, but it does seem something of a limitation.

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

You should've got Sky+

Not with Freesat he can't. But basically, you've hit the nail on the head. If you can't autoswitch to another Freesat channel (Autoview may work, don't know) then you are stuck on the channel that you are currently on. Many STBs are in the same boat though...

I was going to suggest 'autoview', too. I guess this still works on non+ boxes, and the DVDR can be set to respond to the incoming 'wake up' signal from the Sky box.

The OP needs to check the Sky manual and that the DVDR is compatible.

Hi folks!

Yes, Autoview does work as a way of recording things on more than one channel. Thanks a lot for all your help. Looks like I'll now be able to watch wall-to-wall 'George & Mildred', 'Robin's Nest' and 'Murder she Wrote'.

[NB - I am kidding ....]

Make sure you test this thoroughly before relying on it. Autoview has a couple of gotchas! Check this thread: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=618892

Some DVDRs (usually the ones with built-in hard disk) have their own built-in EPG called Guide+ which will allow you to schedule recordings from that and it will change channel on the Sky box automatically via an infra-red dongle. Check just to make sure if you DVDR has this or not.

Chris,

Thanks for that. My DVDR isn't sophisticated enough to have Guide+, but I'm managing the other way. Does seem to be a bit of a mine-field, though ...
