I used to be involved in the broadcasting industry a long way away from on screen and about a million miles away from any glamour and I knew dodgy stuff was going on with competitions (not premium rate in this case) I don't believe that anybody in the studio was unaware of it, either.

I also don't believe that Ant and Dec were unaware. They would be getting briefings on the selected contestant through their earpieces before they were selected. What you need to bear in mind is that these practices were entenched and common place. Getting the right "excitable" people for the show was more important than running the competition fairly.

The way I heard it thet didn't actually ask him any questions they just jumped out and started filming as he drove away! they didn't expect to see him and wer in a hurry to film that's why the camera was shaky and there was no footage of him actually coming out of his house and getting into the car.
