Subwoofer Interference
Whenever I have my Home Cinema amp and subwoofer swtiched on, I get a loud popping noise coming from the sub whenever a light switch is turned on or off in the house and also when the central heating boiler kicks in. Any ideas on what causes this and how I can emiminate it?. It only happens if the amp and sub are both switched on. If the amp is off but the sub is on, it does not happen.

Sounds like you have some electrical interference through the mains and it is affecting the amp.
I can see the boiler having an affect, but not heard of lights being a problem before, maybe because they are on another circuit, are these lights in fact lamps that you are using and are plugged into the mains? Have you tried plugging the amp into another socket? I have heard fitting suppresses to the offending piece(s) of equipment, fridge, microwave, boiler etc can help eliminate the problem. |

The switching on of a light or boiler is causing mains interference on the power supply of your amplifier. The amplifier is clearly not filtering out this inteference (which it ought to do) as it's passing through to the low frequency stage of the amp which feeds the sub-woofer. I recommend you buy a mains filter that you plug your hi-fi equipment into.
You may also have an electrical problem with your house wiring as the lighting circuit shouldn't be affecting it. If your house isn't modern and you haven't had a periodic inspection for a while then I'd recommend that as well. |
