Iv just moved into a house with a friend, the house is still owned by the original owners but they are now letting the house. They have had a bt phone line and internet in which have now been cut of because they havnt paid it so we are stuck without internet. How do we go about getting the line reconected in our name without having to pay any of the previous peoples bill? Were stuck for money so wanted to go with talk talk international with broadband can we just phone them and can they take over the line, as we have no details of the previous people.

thanks,
5th

Further to previous (almost identical) replies, no, you can't.

If you try, Talk Talk will (falsely) claim you must have an operational BT line before they can take over.

That's a lie (not that knowing that will help you).

OTOH, THIS might.

Its likely that because of the previous debt at the property that BT will ask for a deposit (Usually £50 and refundable after 6 months or on termination) so a hint would be when placing your order to have a debit card handy,

If you do connect and go to talk talk just after, BT will charge a £70 cancellation charge, (For terminating before the end of the 12 mth contract)

You are not liable to have to pay the previous occupiers bill. (You may have to provide proof of your previous address)
