Nope. The Clash and The Jam, for me.
Always found JD a tad too depressing, tbh. |

I always thought it was said Sonic Youth were the most influential band ever??
That said, is their any band out there that doesnt quote either The beatles or led Zeppelin to be an influence??? |

The Kinks are perhaps the most influential group in terms of British music, given you can trace their influence through bands like The Jam to Blur....

Was heavilly into them at the time, to be honest i feel like i'm intruding on Ian's quite obviously disturbed thoughts when I hear Closer now. Find some of the stuff quite hard going now, though maybe as I've got older i've lightened up a lot. Saying that, there is pure quality there and Hannett's titting around adds something that makes them sound fresh to this day. Never liked New Order as much
Influential? Definately Most Influential? Nah |

DO you agree? Much as I like Joy Division, I've never thought of them as being especially influential. |

They created a lot of great songs in a matter of two years.

Joy Division were an immensely important band for their heavy, doom-laden sound, particularly with Peter Hook's bass guitar right at the front, being played more like a lead guitar than one just providing rhythm.
They arguably kick-started the whole Goth genre, although there were several other pioneers around at that time, from Siouxsie and the Banshees to the Damned (who certainly inspired the gothic horror look) and Bauhaus. New Order, in turn, paved the way for the crossover of rock and dance music, which inspired the Manchester scene of the late 80s (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspirals, Charlatans etc.) and other contemporary bands like Primal Scream. As for being the most influential, though...I think the big names in the 60s - Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Hendrix, Led Zep, Clapton, Velvet Underground etc were more influential as a whole, as was David Bowie, who has been cited as a major influence on countless artists. The Sex Pistols' influence cannot be denied, either. They opened the doors to hundreds of young bands and inspired them to make music which was simple, immediate and didn't require any great technical skill or singing ability. The Pistols arrived at a time when many of the big names in rock (Pink Floyd, Yes etc.) were so overblown that they were carrying their tour gear around in articulated lorries. The Sex Pistols allowed bands to go on tour out the back of a Transit van. The other important part of that punk DIY ethos was the emergence of independent music labels. To make it in the music industry you no longer needed to sell yourself to big corporations like Polydor or Chrysalis; you could get yourself a record real with a small, independent company willing to take a risk on bands who refused to follow the mainstream. |
