Was listening to 'Never Forget' by Take That earlier, and noted how it always takes me a couple of secs to remember that it's Howard singing, not Gary, because they sound quite similar.

Like Graham Coxon - didn't realise for ages it was him singing the Blur song Coffee & TV, rather than Damon.

So it got me thinking (it was that or write the reflective report I'm meant to be getting on with): do all 'other' singers in bands end up sounding like their frontman eventually?

A bit like how women living in the same house are meant to co-ordinate their menstrual cycle?

What?! That was Graham on Coffee & TV?!?

Anyway, I think not. Take That had been apart for 10 years and though their voices may have matured they still remain characteristically unique.

(I can't believe I just wrote that )

Well, interestingly, I don't find it so much the case listening to Howard's bits on 'Rule The World'.

So maybe their voices have now diverged.

Yes, I have found this with xtc. Colin Moulding sounds very similar to Andy Partridge.

Oh, totally. I think Genesis were the other example I was casting around for when I started this thread, and it's been niggling me.

Yes, I have found this with xtc. Colin Moulding sounds very similar to Andy Partridge.
Do you really think so?

I would say the two had completley distinctive voices, I would even go as far as saying despite many imitators Andy Partridge has a unique singing voice.

Yes, some tracks more than others, perhaps it's that Wiltshire burr, although Andy's seems more pronounced when singing than Colins.

Re post nine.....I suppose it depends how much you listen to a band doesn't it? Of your above list, I've got all REM's records and a Mike Mills lead vocal stands out a mile........

That said.....good one about Ride.....I've got all their stuff and wouldn't really know who's singing........I generally assume it's Mark Gardener, who I can do a mean impression of incidentally - same accent y'know.......

IMO Liam and Noel sound nothing like each other.

Actually that's a fair point and certainly on the early albums there was a similarity. I suppose when you become a huge fan of a band you tend to notice the difference.

As someone pointed out to the casual listener Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of REM can sound similar sometimes, I only found out it was Mike Mills singing Superman after I read somewhere. Then again Stipes backing vocals are very high in the mix on that song.

As someone has already pointed out Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon of Blur have very similar sounding voices and it hard to tell the difference.

Noel and Liam sound completely different to my ears, Noel is less nasally than Liam.

I forgot to add good call on Ride. It was only from the second album onwards they started crediting singers to the song in the writing credits. Without that I would not of known which tracks Mark Gardener sang and which one's where Andy Bell's.

When Paul McCartney uses his 'deeper' voice (e.g. Lady Madonna, Oh That Magic Feeling) my dad thinks it sounds like Ringo, although I must say I can't hear it myself.

There are some Pink Floyd songs that I cant decide on whether it is Waters or Gilmour singing.

Guns N' Roses - Izzy Stradlin can sound quite a lot like Axl Rose's clean voice at times. Check out '14 Years' from Use Your Illusions II - took me a while to figure out that it wasn't Axl singing!

Liam and Noel sound nothing like each other. Noel does a better vocal range, but Liam has a huge stage presence and a great gnarly voice
