Sick of BT! Any alternative that allows your own ISP?

I'm in the process of ordering a BT phoneline.

I ordered it weeks ago and the line didn't become active when it was supposed to. Since then I've spent literally hours waiting on the line to get through to someone who can help, and then when I do they either cut me off or pass the buck or give me wrong information.

I just wish I could use someone other than BT, but if I do that I suspect there will be no way I can choose which ISP I go with… right?

Unless you're in a cable area - or an area which has wireless broadband you need a BT line before you can do anything really.

You can try contacting bt via www.bt.com/newcustomer - they'll give you a call the next day generally.

You appear to talking about the same thing as me - but from the other direction. Orange have offered to take over my BT land line, so BT would no longer have anything to do with it.

Are they worse than BT customer service ????

It's hard to imagine how anyone could.

Getting to speak to someone at BT by phone is a very difficult job.

All I ever hear is "we are very busy doo dah doo dah doo dah "

Well, I'm back online now, after being without Internet for 7 weeks.

I was without a phone line for well over a month.

I spent a total of 22½ hours on the phone to BT to try and get it sorted. During which, I had 5 people tell me they were "putting me through" and actually hang up on me. I was told completely different things by just about every advisor I spoke to, half of whom I could barely understand.

I really strongly hate BT now. Or at least its customer service.

Also, the broadest broadband I can get here is 2mbps.

Get your own back by using a CPS and indirect access calls providers for most of your calls then.

We used Talk Talk for Line & calls, and BT for Broadband over the same line, and that worked fine.

This was over a business service, so can't say it would work for domestic lines. I just never told one or the other what I was doing.

Welcome to the club!

If you can bare another phone call, call the customer services and when you get through immediately demand to speak to the shift-manager - they will try and put you off, but be persistent, the quicker they realise you will settle for nothing less than speak to someone of management status the quicker they will pass you over. When you get the manager explain to them exactly what you have been through and how long it has taken you, then ask "What are you going to do to compensate my time?" Because managers are spineliess, and particularly at BT, they will flash you an offer, if you like it take it.

In my recent troubles with BT I did the above and got a £200 cheque and 2 months free BB (2 seperate incidents). They still provide a shocking service and I will be contacting another manager soon - when will they ever learn.

Finally to all those thinking of going with BT - be warned.

I have had a similar problem with BT. I was with them for landline & broadband, but then wanted to change to O2 for the b/band, and not have a landline phone at all, as I have an O2 contract mobile, and can get b/band for £10 pm. I was told I would still have to pay for their cheapest phone package just to be able to utilise their line for the b/band from O2. I had to get a code of some sort from BT for O2 to activate, and 3 times BT refused to give it to me, offering me other deals. The 4th time I rang I had to shout at them and insist they give it to me. I have just received a bill from BT for both the landline AND broadband, even though I haven't used theirs since November! They said they would send me an amended bill, but have since sent me another for even more! Not sure where to go from here, because if BT cut me off I can't use the O2 b/band anyway. Help!!!!!
