I know this has been probably asked before, can't seem to find it. I have seen a Phillips 42PFL7662D (1080p)for 999 in John Lewis (5 yr guarantee), but also seen a Panasonic TH42PXB for 799 on empire direct (5 yr warranty) or a Panasonic TH42PX70B for 729, same place. Empire direct are also doing the Samsung PS42Q9HDX for 949 (3 yr warr) - now I like the Panasonic, but the numbers and letters are confusing - tried comparing but they seem virtually similar. Of all these TVs, which do you guys recommend for quality (they also do LG 42PC55 for 599, but I suppose you get what you pay for?). sorry to drone on, but with technology rapidly changing - if I don't buy one soon I will tear my hjair out and end up never buying one. Is is worth paying extra for the 1080p models? Thanks a lot.

Don't know about the philips or Samsung models but the Panasonic px70b is the wall mountable version. The other is on a pedestal.
If you look at www.dixons.co.uk you will find it for £699 as opposed to £799 that you found it for.
Personally though I would go for the Panasonic TH42PZ70 which is 1080p and can be got at just around £1000. The price is currently fluctuating on this model, I saw it last week for £985 but this week its back up to £1099.
Could be one for a boxing day bargain!!!

Ok, you have asked a lot there so I'll help you out by saying stay clear of the Philips when it is up against the Panasonic PX70.

Don't bother with 1080p right now, save your money and buy a Panasonic PX70 PED (pedestal it means, the 'B' means it is just the panel and the UK edition, confusing I know!)

I saw the Panny PX70 42" in John Lewis (Glasgow) for £749 with a price match and the pedestal was an extra £99.

Although Empire Direct you can get an extra 3 year warranty for becoming an Edextra member for about £20 quid, well worth it.

So buy the PX70 and sit back and enjoy High Def

The only reason to have 1080p is if you're going to hook it up to a PC and use it as a monitor. Then the higher resolution may come in handy. As for using it to watch TV and films 720p is more than adequate and you'd struggle to see the difference between 1080p unless you sit quite close to the TV. (not to mention the only 1080p device is a bluray player)

What about...
PS3
Xbox 360
HD DVD
Blue Ray

Arn't they good reasons to get 1080p?

But i do think a lot of people think they need 1080p but will never use it in the life of the TV.

I did mention bluray which also covers ps3, but i accept the xbox and hd dvd both output 1080p.
But from what i've read even with a 42" TV you'd struggle to notice the difference between 720p & 1080p unless you were very close to the screen.
