Hi Guys, rather than hi-jack someone else's thread i thought i would start a new one asking for a format recommendation and maybe a player.

Getting itchy fingers and am thinking about jumping into the HD player marker (bought on by watching Die Hard 4 last night and The Blue Planet being only £34 from Virgin). Have not really paid much attention to the fight to date as I could afford a player but they seem to be sub £300 now according to an advert from Richer Sounds I rcvd.

Spent the past year upgrading my system so this might top it off and make asking for Christmas presents easier.

Questions are: Which format is better (cheaper, more titles, more studios, winning public opinion etc) and what's flavour of the moment in terms of players? do these players upscale too?

Personally Im waiting for the dual BR/HD players to come out at a reasonable price, Samsung have or are bringing out the BD-UP5000 in January 08 for about £490.

Looks like I'll be waiting another couple of years

HD DVD is cheaper, but has fewer studios currently supporting it. And who's winning and what's the best format is dependent on which fanboy you ask!

All players upscale.

I have a PS3, so I buy Blu-ray now and again, but I just advice people to just wait it out. In this moment in time I would say that BD is more unlikely to just go away.

If you don't want to wait, then go for the cheapest (HD-DVD) or whatever format has the most films you want to watch...both formats will be here to stay despite what fanboys say.

Tend to think, hd will stay, as thats the buzz word more than blu-ray, however it does depend on releases, as both formats in terms of quality are great, I am in same boat, but I am going the hd way, just put name down on a new tosh one, need a new dvd player, any way and spent 200 notes on my first dvd player years ago. And if hd format only lasts a couple of years, would have got the wear out of the player.

Choice mainly down to price, and no region lock on hd discs yet? Though buying a ps3 is good buy for both games and blu ray, but i would rather have a dedicated player. There will be a few years of life in any format.

Even now it's still a case of risking the long term investment when buying a format purely for movies, the PS3 can offset this with the gaming angle.

If you've waited this long then wait till the new year, the overall market could be more clear depending upon what happens in the US and like Kojack says next year should see full spec dual players (for a price).

Check Ebay.com, Wal-Mart in the US was selling Toshiba HD-DVD players for $98 the past few days, and there are a few on there, average price is about $120, + $78 postage, which according to my calculations is just under $200, so about £100... Worth a punt?

Thanks guys. Been checking out the Toshiba HD-E1 and HD-EP30. The E1 comes with 5 free DVDs and the EP30 comes 7 including 300 and The Bourne Supremacy for £180-£210. Seems a decent deal for not a lot of investment.

At those prices you are not going to be too upset if somewhere down the line hardware ceases to be developed and even then dual format players will be around and software wouldn't stop dead.

Remember the E1 won't do 1080p where as the EP30 will, might be important at some point.

It's the Betamax Vs VHS all over again - trying to decide myself on this - think I will heed the advice above and hang on a little longer!

You certainly won't lose out by waiting especially with more dual format players on the horizon assuming they get the cost below that of buying two seperate players.

There comes a time when denying yourself a pleasure for the sake of a bit of cash is soul destroying

as soon as i want to watch a HD movie i will get a PS3 or the addon for my Xbox, i cant see the point in getting a separate player.

This is exactly what i did with DVD, I got a PS2.
