Copying DVDs (VOB) files to an IPOD

I am planning on buying myself a video Ipod for Christmas, I already have a psp portable, and want something smaller, I want to use if for copying DVDs that I have copied from the TV, as I am deaf, I do not need it for music or anything else, can someone tell me a good ripper to copy the VOB files to the video IPod as I want to see how it looks, before (or if) I buy the video Ipod

Well aside from the fact Vob files are huge, you could just drag them onto your desktop without any software.

Just put the DVD in the drive, right click and 'Explore' the contents, then just drag them.

Unless you mean how to convert them to a format that the Ipod uses, then DivX converter, Auto GK or Nero will do that.

Assuming you're going to use subtitles with these ...

Would you not be better off with something with a bigger screen?

Something like:

Cowon A2
Archos 5/6/7 series

There is also the Creative Vision:W but I know it doesn't handle separate subtitle files .... you have to hardcode them when you rip.

Both have screens around 4" rather than the 2.5" iPod screen. Not sure about the Archos players but I own an A2 myself and it can handle DivX with separate subtitle file. I've never used them myself but apparently you can alter the size of the subtitle on the player as well.

Both are bigger than a standard iPod but smaller than a PSP and the battery life on the A2 for video is 10 hours .... considerably better than the iPod.

The iPod is a good music player (if not to my tastes) but a decidedly average video player. If video is your main aim, especially with subtitles, you should look at PMP's instead.

The ipod needs mp4 or mv4 format not VOBs, there may be an easier way to do this, but I use a free mac thing called handbrake to rip and convert DVDs for an ipod touch. And Mpeg streamclip to compress them further. I've made them about 700MB a movie and the picture quality is superb they could easily be compressed much further. By the way you need to use itunes to put the videos on to your ipod either by syncing to your pc library or manually copying the videos using itunes.
I've found sometimes itunes doesn't like my compression and converts the videos again to its prefered format all by itself.

...for video the ipod touch is the one to get - much bigger screen and much thinner than the classic one. Its brilliant and does wifi internet and email and more.

upon a quick glance at net it would seem that you would have to pay to get a decent program that rips direct from dvd to an ipod ready video

You may try Aimersoft iPod Converter Suite, I always use it to rip DVD and convert video to my iPod, it's not free, but it works really nice for me
