Philips Ambilight
Is it any good?
I've got anything up to £1500 to spend on an HDTV, probably needs to be a 37 inch max as Im planning on watching it over the width of the lounge rather than length. 1080 ideally as well. Any alternative suggestions? |

DON'T BOTHER!
I have an ambilight TV and yes it is nice, BUT for the money there are a lot better TVs out there without the lights on. £1500 for a 37" TV?? that will get you an amazing set. If you NEED 1080p then then I would say Panasonic or Toshiba LCD, look for the highest contrast. A lot of people wany 1080 but dont really need it or even know what it is, if you dont need it i would get the Panasonic Plasma. |

I like Ambilight but yeah the premium it costs is probably better spent on the internal processing and panel quality.
That said the new Philips look stunning but you have to ask why the huge promotion based on the ambilight and not the out and out performance as in the Pio Kuro marketing

Have you seen the new Philips Aurea?
1 word - beautiful! Even the picture quality seemed head and shoulders above everything else in Comet but then I don't suppose everything else had the Discovery HD promo running through it. Take a look anyway, if you like the look of Ambilight then you'll absolutely LOVE the Aurea (it's the successor to Ambilight). |

Firstly AFAIK you can get an Ambilight 37" for under a grand.
Secondly I dont see the point as it assumes you always watch TV in the dark - I dont. |

It's just as valid to want a TV with 1080p input if the resolution doesn't match as it is if it does. |

I got mine for ~£700. Absolutely love it - the quality of both SD and HD is fantastic! It's been consistently rated as either the best or very near in the 32" class.
Has anyone beaten this price? Whats the best deal for the 37" Aurea? |

True, but most sets over £800 have it anyway.Even if it were a £150 difference. You may as well pay that little more, for a 1080p set, just to futureproof it.You never know when you might need it. |

I have a 50 inch Philips plasma that has ambilight and pixel plus - the picture quality is stunning and the ambilight certainly does make a difference. Its very subtle - but you do notice when its turned off. Its kinda like having surround sound for your picture.
That said I wouldnt go for crap picture quality just to have it - but philips flat panels (especially the ones with pixel plus - which also makes a huge difference) dont suffer from bad picture quality anyway. I was drooling when I saw the new Aurea on the web - i'll have to pop into a store and take a look at one in the flesh. |
