The new TF 8010 and Upscaling

With the increase of HD televisions around I have started to see devices proclaiming that their output is UPSCALED, but when I try to find out any information regarding this upscaling I hit a “brick wall”.

I have found a definition of upscaling on the net:

How does upscaling work?
Upscaling can’t add new info, they create extra lines of pixels by copying parts of surrounding pixels, effectively "guessing" at what the image should look like at a higher resolution. If done badly, it can ruin picture quality.

It would be nice to know what standard of interpolation the new toppy will use. To be able to upscale 25 to 30 frames/sec of a standard TV picture to a HD 1080p resolution will I think require a great deal of computing power. Or do some upscaling devices only create a high definition image without creating the extra pixel information. Effectively only enlarging the image

I shoud have written TF5810 in the title.

Simple answer - until we see the box, we won't know what standards it outputs - even if it does 1080p; a lot of boxes don't go that high, and frankly there's not that much point, if all you're starting with is 576i in my view.

But anyway, in terms of computing power, tasks like that are done by dedicated chips, rather than a general purpose CPU, so what's available depends on the chipset that handles the HDMI video.

If they're just slapping an upscaler on the existing chipset (as seems most likely) then I'd expect 576p/720p/1080i will be the available outputs.
