Thanks to all of you who responded to my earlier question on which plasma to buy - I am now going to buy a Panasonic TH42PX, the question is has anyone got any experience of the warranties offered by John Lewis or empire direct?? The prices are similar, but I'd prefer to spend the little extra, if needed, to get a good warranty. Thanks agin for your help guys (and girls!).

john lewis provide 5 years as standard on their tvs. A very good warranty indeed.

As far as i remember empiredirect only offer the manufacturers warranty, unless you take their ed extra card in which case you get 3 years.

Maybe worthwhile you getting a citibank credit card. They offer and extra years warranty on purchases of electronics with their card.....always a good deal!!

I thought Panasonic were currently giving a 5 year warranty on most of their sets anyway? - via Domestic & General Insurance - same as the Sony 5 year one.

The John Lewis five year guarantee is a very good offer but the way it works is rather strange. There's absolutely no paperwork for it, your only proof of its existence is your VAT receipt. So if you buy online make sure you download, print and save the VAT receipt. To make a claim you contact John Lewis. So far we haven't had to make a claim, so I've no idea what happens then.

I was in comet yesterday discussing a samsung tv and the issue of warranty arose, The comet salesman, very good I thought and not on commission, told of how other customers had claimed on their JL warranty and had unexpected problems. I think he said, eg, when a LCD tv failed, and it was say over a year old, Lewis's would offer a prorata refund/replacement rather than a 100% as new for old. They also did not cover all situations involving dead pixels.

This seems reasonable, but was disappointing to the claimants. A paid for warranty also covers accidental damage and a new replacement as the lcds are rarely repairable. Personally I would still take the JL warranty, but read the small print to avoid disaapointment.

A paid for warranty dosent cover new for old-unless it cant be repaired!

Part of the problem with the JL guarantee is that there doesn't appear to be any small print, or even any large print.

I've yet to discover whether it covers parts and/or labour, or whether you have to pay transport (presumably you have to send the television to a repair centre). All far too vague.

Apologies to JL if the terms and conditions of the guarantee are somewhere on their web site. I haven't managed to find them.

Good find, thanks.

It's still not clear to me whether the engineer comes out to you, or whether you have to send the television to a service centre (how? who pays? what about packaging?). Also does it cover both parts and labour costs? All far too vague IMHO.
