It's worth reading about Julianne on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julianne_Hough

as it explains how she left home with her brother as teenagers and came to live in England with Corky and Shirley Ballas. She used to dance with Mark Ballas.

The last time I saw Julianne dance live (as opposed to on telly) it was at the International, and she and Mark lit up the floor so completely, it was difficult to watch anyone else! Derek was dancing with his partner at the same time, but although excellent, never quite had what Mark & Julianne had. At the time I was sitting next to Shirley Ballas (when she was still dancing, she and Corky were my favourite dancers). We were once having a meal at Blackpool (Champs) and S & Corky sat near us, with just about everyone else who was a 'Someone' in dancing at the time, and it was the most entertaining meal I have ever had!!

We also used to see Shirley at a practice night (though that was before Mark danced with Julianne) and she was just like any other proud mum watching son dance. No 'world champion' airs and graces with Shirley!

I can remember when Shirley danced with her previous husband Sammy Stopford, and the traumatic break-up, and then forming new partnerships with Corky and Sammy with Barbara McCall. They were on telly quite a lot in those days.

I have been hoping that one of our lovely minxes may be thinking about having the patter of tiny feet soon & if they were on maternity leave Julianne could come over & stand in for her .
The only trouble is cos the winter DWTS is on at the same time as ours, bar a couple of weeks she would not be able to do both .

I know! It's a full-time job over there - Winter & Summer.

Would be great though.

I'd love to see Julianne or Kym on SCD.

How about this for an idea: As the two shows run virtually simultaneously, having a couple of our SCD couples performing on DWTS for a week, whilst two of theirs come over here. Not sure what would be achieved from this and I'm certain it wouldn't happen, it's just part of my personal fantasising about getting Julianne on SCD .

Well I think it's a fabulous idea!

Why not? They brought the celebs over from a previous series, think it was DWTS2, I'd much rather have the pros over, and would love to see an exchange for a week, or an international challenge, shown on ABC and BBC, where the top 3 couples compete against eachother in a special showdown. Fantastic!

'Dancing' star Julianne Hough visits Lexus dealership

12:38 PM CST on Wednesday, January 16, 2008
By ALAN PEPPARD / The Dallas Morning News

How is it that Dancing With the Stars youthful phenom Julianne Hough ended up greeting fans last weekend at Park Place Lexus in Grapevine? Coincidentally, Julianne is the niece of Park Place sales associate Terry Hough.

Julianne is only 19, but she has already put up back-to-back wins on DWTS with two amateur partners, Olympic speed skater Apolo Ohno and Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves.

About 200 people showed up at Park Place and Julianne answered lots of questions. She and Helio are just friends. The producers do have an option to bring her back to Dancing With the Stars for a third season, and she hopes it works out.

(While she didn't date Helio, she was linked to actor Kevin Connolly, who plays Eric "E" Murphy on HBO's Entourage.)

Like any self-respecting reality star, Julianne has a parallel singing career. She had a country single last spring. Her first CD will be out in May.

Dancer's steak out

After Julianne's appearance, her Uncle Terry and Park Place owner Ken Schnitzer took the dancer and a group of Park Place types to eat at Bob's Steak & Chophouse in Grapevine, where she was immediately recognized by several patrons. While in town, Julianne camped out at the Four Seasons in Las Colinas.
Great news that she'll be in the next series!

I only saw her in the series before last, which was shown on Freeview last summer. I have been watching competitions, local and national, in this country for about 50 years, and she is as good as anyone I have seen. She has a dazzling technique, obviously takes her dancing very seriously, and has an intensely dramatic style which makes all the other professionals look as if they are just messing about and having a laugh. I hope they show the last series on Freeview this year.

Aha - a Mormon! That explains a lot - they are good at everything. I remember when a Mormon formation team won at Blackpool, the first non-British team to do so.

Bob, do you remember seeing her brother Derek competing as a Junior?

I find him a very impressive dancer aswell, and a wonderful choreographer.

Can you compare the merits of Julianne, Mark Ballas and Derek Hough as dancers?
Would be very interested to hear your views.

I can remember Mark's Mum Shirley dancing with Sammy Stoppford, then the bitter break up and the new partnerships on and off the dancefloor with Corky Ballas and Barbara MacColl. That was in the days when the BBC showed dancing comps!

In the last series of DWTS, Shirley made an appearance, helping Mark's partner out in interpreting the Rhumba, and I'm sure she contributed to their choreography. Lovely to see a Legend again!

All I know about DWTS is what was shown on Freeview last summer. However I have some recordings of the BBC broadcasts from the UK Championships in 1991-94 and I am putting some clips on YouTube - see the thread "Karen and Ian in their amateur days". I am concentrating on the amateur latin, showing the some of the present-day professionals on SCD, but I will get round eventually to showing bits of the professional latin section, with Corky and Shirley Ballas, Sammy Stopford and Barbara McColl, etc. so you might be interested to see them.

Tony & Julianne perform the Waltz as Josh Groban sings "So She Dances"
Very nice, but where was the waltz?
