Please help!

We finally decided on the Sony Bravia KDL40W2000 and found a good price for it, and have been saving like mad to get it, and now I've just been looking and there seems to be very few - is it perhaps that this model is an old one and so most places haven't got it? If so, can anyone help me find the nearest thing to it as my boyfriend has his heart set on it and also I was impressed with the good reviews!!

Please help me someone!

The 2000 series is being replaced by the 3000 - so KDL40W3000 is now the current model.

However 40W2000s are still around and are likely to be discounted as well - so you should get a good deal if you can find one!

I bought a SONY Bravia and on reflection wish I had not.

The picture is no better than cheaper brands/models I've seen and the menu is illogical with a poorly laid out remote.

Utterly overpriced, in my opinion and you will be paying 50% for a TV and 50% for the name. The only thing is (yet to be proved) it may be more reliable - but who wants something that'll last for years when technology will make it obsolete.

Get a "more value for less money one," then 5 years down the line - replace.

It is overpriced and can't compete with Plasma I'm afraid.

£900 for a TV that is inferior to a whole host of other TV's is not a good start.

In your price range that I'd recommend:

LCD:

Samsung LE40M87
Sharp LC42XD1EA

Plasma:

Panasonic TH-42PX70

I'd give the PX70 the thumbs up, tell your boyfriend that with the Sony he is paying for the badge and getting an inferior product compared to the Panasonic.

Well the W2000 wipes the floor with either of the two LCD's listed above, and possibly the Panasonic as well?, and certainly so on HD - but the W2000 has excellent SD performance as well. I'd like to see the Sony and Panasonic side by side?.

As for 'paying for the badge', this applies equally to Panasonic as well - the whole point of being a top manufacturer is that you can make a little extra due to your reputation.

The Sony Bravia KDL40W2000 is one of the best LCD screens on the market. I would recomend one to anyone!

Re. my previous post: Had to use reply as Editing has timed out.

I recently visited a local Sony Centre to view some TV's.

One the questions I asked the young lady saleswoman was, "what is the RMS output of the amplifier" for a particular top model.

The look she gave was one of embarrassment as she replied, "what is that" and then, "I will have to go and ask the manager."

That just says why Sony's prices are so steep.

Sorry, I don't see your reasoning? - you go in a TV shop and ask a young lady what the RMS output of a TV is - and then when she doesn't know, claim that this proves that Sony's are too expensive?.

If you go in to Currys and ask a young lady for the RMS output of a Panasonic, and she doesn't know, does that prove Panasonic are overpriced?.

BTW, I couldn't tell you what the RMS output power of any Sony LCD is - I could look it up, but it's really not a specification that's of much use. Poor sound on LCD/Plasma's isn't down to lack of power, it's down to insufficient room for decent speakers and enclosures.

I agree with you in all aspects of your reply.

I was just merely trying to point out a general lack of knowledge by sales staff and more of "just buy one, isn't it a stunning picture" attitude that I have come across at Curry's, Comet and many others.
Basically I am not persuaded by any of these people and prefer to make my own mind up.
Unfortunately I didn't do that with the Sony I bought, it was my OH who was impressed with the supposedly free DVD recorder that came with it at the time.
However I will know "next time".

The Panasonic PX70 beats the Sony, the Sony is horribly styled for a piece of kit that is £900 and for that price you can get similar specced TVs for cheaper.

If you like throwing money away go buy a Sony, if you want to spend less and get a superior TV then go Panasonic.

I think this is a case of "One mans meat is another mans poison" I have always been a Sony man, however in June when I bought my LCD frankly I decided that within reason that I would not let budget dictate what I would purchase & initially looked at Sony.
However after looking at numerous sets at various dealers I settled for the Samsung LE40M86 because I could simply not find another set that came close to the outstanding picture quality.

I'm sure many out there may like other brands but at the end of the day thats why we have choice!

The Sony is badly styled overpriced and produces an inferior picture to the Panasonic Plasma.

The Panasonic Plasma is only an entry level as well, why do you think the best large screens (42"+) are all Plasma?

But all only in YOUR opinion! - funnily enough I've just delivered and installed a 40W2000, only terrestrial signals, but still a cracking picture!.

On what basis do you make the comparison "wipes the floor" with the Sharp 1080p model quoted. In my limited (I must say) experience of comparing LCD TVs Sharps in general wipe the floor with Sony on SD particularly from Freeview. I have read good reports of the D series Sony in this respect but unfortunately have never been able to get a good demo.

I have always attributed the Sharps performance in this context to the faster response time of their ASV panel.

However have not been really able to put the Full HD to WXGA comparison in the context of SD viewing. Have you any comments?

Simply comparing the pictures in the shop, and the Sonys are all better than the Sharps, all fed from the same sources.

The particular Sony set mentioned is an exceptionally well performing set, but even the cheaper Sony's tend to be better than the Sharps.

This isn't to say I would suggest a cheaper Sony over a Sharp! - I did an extensive soak test on a Sharp and a similar spec Sony in the workshop, side by side, same signal. And while the Sony was noticably better, it wasn't by very much, I would be perfectly happy with either - and I would suggest the price premium of the Sony over the Sharp possibly isn't worth the fairly small improvement.

However, as set up for display, no LCD TV is actually showing a correctly set-up signal. They are all usually set up with the colour and brightness set up way too high, to give a "stand-out" vibrant display.

The Sharp LCD Panel used in the LC37XD1 and LC46XD1 when set up correctly actually almost exactly matches the colour and gamma specification for TV displays. The White balance is similarly spot on for most of the range, only tending towards the blue tinge between dark-grey and black.

(For reference, the LC42XD1 uses a different LCD panel produced in a different Factory, so responds slightly differently)

Actually I would say it's because they are being used in a very brightly lit shop - the first thing to do when you install them for a customer is drop them down to 'standard'.

This is how the sets come in the box - the manufacturers obviously don't think shop staff can turn them up themselves!. I hate to think how many customers don't know to turn it down!.

On the posative side I agree the Sony unit is a cracking TV and the picture is one of the best on the market (in my opinion!!) the HD is fantastic if you take the time to set it up correctly and not just accept the factory settings. As for the build quality I have looked at them all and the only units that didn't look cheap were the Sony and Panasonic offering a timeless design. Now for the down side the remote is ugly but this didn't stop me as I control my unit through My Sky box. I think most manufacturers know you will be using an alternative remote so they invest less development time into the remote design.
