My Tv is having a slow death

My bedroom tv is having a slow death

It is a CRT Tv so maybe time to have an upgrade, but its a shame really.

Its been good, Its a Hitachi 28inch

It seems to just switch off at random times to standby and back on again,

Somtimes it goes into standby and it wont come back on, It just 'tries' so its time to unplug it and leave for 5mins

Or it will keep flicking to standby then on then standby one after the other!

Very strange!

I found out though (after being angry and annoyed as i was trying to watch something)

That if you bang the screen while its trying to turn on or flicking to standby and on.. It comes on.

I have just done it now.

Its all strange, I don't know whats going on!

Sounds like a power supply issue, probably dried out capacitors.

TBH I'd sling it -- you can pick up working TVs from ebay for less than a tenner. What's the point in getting these things fixed any more?

Hitachi's have been poor for many years now, but it sounds like dry joints - a VERY common problem on Hitachi's.

Aren't these Hitachis just rebadged Vestels/Bekos anyway?

A lot of them are these days, over the years though they badged a lot of different makes - and even made a few themselves!.

Indeed, sounds like the classic dry joints from a few years ago.

Incidentally, the Beko/Vestel sets seem quite reliable!

Its going slowly, Turning off more than ever but i am going to put up with it, Its fine after it has been on for a while it will run, but leave it off and come to turn it on and it no doubt go off within 5mins,

Knocking the front of it seems to kick it in and turn it on, How come this happens?

Because like we said, it's most likely dry joints, mechanically 'disturbing' the board might make it touch again.

If you know anyone who is a dab hand with a soldering iron it can be easily fixed. There's couple of voltage regulators in the middle of the circuit board on heat sinks which suffer with dry/bad connections resoldering them will resolve the problem. But if not sure leave it along there's alot of high voltage flying arround in there!
