Well, if his dance is underdone, it's all over.

But, will he leave under a cloud, because of his dunderheid choices?

I'm always quite envious (as an English rugby fan) that the Scots, Welsh, and so on, have good "anthems" to use at these things, whereas we're always stuck with GSTQ which has to be one of the dullest national anthems ever *sigh* (I'm in favour of England using "Swing Low" personally )

Sorry, totally OT. Bu the real deal (GSTQ) is a bit rubbish isn't it.

I'm not a fan of Kenny at all, but I think he is very proud of being a Scot and wants to celebrate his roots. FoS is an emotive song maybe best reserved for an hard edged rallying cry on a rugby pitch, so let the jury be out and see what happens. It may be appropriate for the dance, it may not. We shall all see on the programme.

Under the terms of the Act of Union,
however undercooked the dance might be,
under no circumstances will Scots allow Kenny to be undermarked by the judges,
let that be clearly understood.

Given his announcements that he'd wear a kilt for the paso doble (if still in) and that he'd dance to Flower of Scotland next week (if still in), he certainly appears to have embraced the "angle" angle . Assuming the idea came form the BBC rather than from him, of course.

Equally, if the ideas were Kenny's in the first place, there's no denying that the BBC have seized on the "angle" with great gusto (but little taste - IMO).

I do not underestimate the possibility that the underlying Scottish patriotism will refuse to allow a fellow countryman to be 'undermined' on national TV. After all, it appears that the Scottish vote undertook to overlook the fact that Kenny wore undergarments underneath his kilt last week - over-turning tradition!

(Thankfully - it saved Ola from having to undergo the sight of his undercovered undercarriage, under the glare of the TV cameras. Bad enough if she had been underwhelmed by the experience; imagine if she had been overwhelmed, and overcome! )

lol

It also saved us and the audience in the studio - definite hint-of-pants visible at points, I think it would have been a little bit (more) scary otherwise...

Scottish engineering should never be undervalued. Had Ola opened her eyes she would have seen the undercarriage was securely underpinned.

I would never underrate Scottish engineering!

The vision of those famous trusses and cantilevers are a constant undercurrent in my discussions on this subject!*

*Scottish engineering, that is

How about Kate and Anton dancing to the English National Anthem or Getin and Camilla dancing to Land of my Fathers.”

let's not forget voters in Northern Ireland too

while FoS is a beautiful song - I don't think it is appropriate and the choice of it brings out the cynic in me - it would be the same if there were an Irish particpant who chose to dance to "Fields of Athenry"...

It is however often used for a waltz - I've shuffled around the floor to it a few times myself! Mind you at that point it's usually played on the accordion so it should be an interesting version tonight.

Well, you can stand if you want to, but do you also stand and salute when you hear 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'?

Flower of Scotland is a popular FOLK song written by one of the Corries.

So here are my questions then: Do you assume that Kenny normally doesn't listen to Scottish music or is not proud to be Scottish? If he isn't then you are right, and he is milking his "Scottish" roots for what they are worth. If he is proud of his roots (and I get the feeling that he is), he would be fake and false not to put into the dance that important part of who he is. Well some people on this forum have accused Kelly of being false and fake (and I don't say she is), do you want Kenny to behave in a false and fake way?

By the way, Flower of Scotland is a three time song, which fits the Viennese Waltz perfectly and captures the mood. I think it's a better choice than some of the ludicrous song choices that have been made in the past on SCD, but there again it's just another way of bashing Kenny.

I think you've actually put your finger on it. Kenny's dancing to a tune that means a lot to him, will work as a VW, and will have a certain tongue-in-cheek relevance to his Scottish Rugby pals. Wouldn't be surprised if he got the idea off one of them.
