I've been waiting for someone to notice this! As someone else said, it's not the national anthum, it started life as a folk song, that became popular on the terraces of rugby matches in much the same way as Swing Low Sweet Chariot is sung at England games. It was said on ITT that Alesha grew up dancing to Michael Jackson, which was used to explain her choice of song for the Samba, which Arlene thinks doesn't go properly. A lot of people thought Kelly's song choice last week was wrong, but she said she loved Bon Jovi so much, and little more was said. Kenny picks a song that means something to him, and it's not allowed to be a bit of fun for him, it has to be a devious ploy to win the votes of Scottish people, who by all accounts should be voting for him anyway, simply for being Scottish!
I know a lot of people prefer the traditional ballroom and latin music, but I'm not one of them, and I enjoy it when the celebs try something a bit different and we get some variety. I can't think of any contemporary songs that are in 3/3 time, therefore suitable for a waltz. Just because it offends Len's traditional sensibilities, Flower of Scotland is a song that normal people waltz to in Scotland at weddings and so on. It's one thing to think Kenny shouldn't play the Scottish card, but does he have to pretend he isn't influenced by any aspect of Scottish culture to do so?
Having said all of that, I am a bit worried about him dancing to FOS. Not just because some people with gripes about Scottish culture will use it against him, but because the song could quite easily be ruined if it's given to the wailing female singer. She made such a hash of Heaven for Alesha last week, that it put me off the dancing. In the rehearsal footage, the backing tape had a female voice, which is a shame. I think they would be better off dancing to the music alone, which would hopefully mitigate some of the anti-Scottish feeling too.
