This is a good idea for the next series line up - WEE JIMMY CRANKY. Obviously she would have to be partnered with darren - The shortest man alive.

I've been waiting for someone to notice this! As someone else said, it's not the national anthum, it started life as a folk song, that became popular on the terraces of rugby matches in much the same way as Swing Low Sweet Chariot is sung at England games. It was said on ITT that Alesha grew up dancing to Michael Jackson, which was used to explain her choice of song for the Samba, which Arlene thinks doesn't go properly. A lot of people thought Kelly's song choice last week was wrong, but she said she loved Bon Jovi so much, and little more was said. Kenny picks a song that means something to him, and it's not allowed to be a bit of fun for him, it has to be a devious ploy to win the votes of Scottish people, who by all accounts should be voting for him anyway, simply for being Scottish!

I know a lot of people prefer the traditional ballroom and latin music, but I'm not one of them, and I enjoy it when the celebs try something a bit different and we get some variety. I can't think of any contemporary songs that are in 3/3 time, therefore suitable for a waltz. Just because it offends Len's traditional sensibilities, Flower of Scotland is a song that normal people waltz to in Scotland at weddings and so on. It's one thing to think Kenny shouldn't play the Scottish card, but does he have to pretend he isn't influenced by any aspect of Scottish culture to do so?

Having said all of that, I am a bit worried about him dancing to FOS. Not just because some people with gripes about Scottish culture will use it against him, but because the song could quite easily be ruined if it's given to the wailing female singer. She made such a hash of Heaven for Alesha last week, that it put me off the dancing. In the rehearsal footage, the backing tape had a female voice, which is a shame. I think they would be better off dancing to the music alone, which would hopefully mitigate some of the anti-Scottish feeling too.

in defence of those who are a tad cynical - it does follow on from last week when he wore a kilt
*Sparkle*

The cynics will always find something to moan about.

It's normal for Scottish men to wear kilts to formal dances and more to the point, it looks good and suited the dance.

The professional dancers were wearing their capes wrapped around their waists to start with, and part of the dance is to swish it around. Well that's what happens when you dance in a kilt!

Kenny's not a great dancer, and he knows it, but he's enthusiastic and injecting some personality into it which is why he's one of the most popular contestants. Some judges might have thought he was too masculine (in his skirt) for the dance, but the BBC picked a clip of a kilt swish for this week's trailer.

The more I think about it, the more I really don't get this idea of a "Scottish vote". I'm a Scot, living in Edinburgh, and I chat with a lot of folk about SCD, and not once has anyone ever said to me that they've voted for Kenny because he's Scottish/wore a kilt/will be dancing to Scottish music. As a matter of fact, no-one I know votes for Kenny anyway, but if they like his dancing, it's because they found it entertaining/think he seems like fun/they fancy Ola...

Is the "Scottish vote" even a thing? I'm not convinced-- but maybe I hang out with the wrong sort of people.

I'm Scottish and live in Edinburgh too!! Yay
I don't get the "Scottish vote" either and have never voted for Kenny and probably never will. The whole Scottish thing he's gone for is just kinda creepy.

Speaking as a Scot, I'd like to see a jive to 'Hoots Mon'.

Oh no! Not even Strictly is safe from the West Lothian Question!

Fair enough reason

Gabby was evicted at bookies price 33 to 1. Nobody is safe, it's all relying on voters.

5 minutes to go.
Mobilise, mobilise, battle stations.

Penny and Ian expect (Penny doubly so) !

I don't mind his choice of song in the least, it reflects his heritage and it's the right tempo.

I thought Kenny was graceful, dignified, moved well. Did wonderfully well, and the thistle (?) flower appearing from nowhere (hidden in his sleve?) was a handsome and ingenious idea. Music and tempo superb.

And I am a very critical viewer.

It seems so desperate to me. Its totally naff almost like one of the English contestants dancing to Land of Hope and Glory or summit.
Mistermind

Land of Hope and Glory is a statement on politics and pageantry and monarchy.

Flowers of Scotland paints the rolling hills and colours in sound, it is about the love affair between Scots and their beautiful country, and their bonnie lasses.

me too. although I thought he did a good dance.

Don't like FoS for like a few reasons:

a. it's a dirge
b. singing about a 700 year old battle isn't cool.
c. Scots don't need to sing about 700 year old battles anymore.

Having said that, I thought the band did quite a good job with it.

If I could think of a suitably patriotic, without being jingoistic, Englush song that matched the rhythm of any of the dances then why not? Anyone?

totally agree - I am of Irish heritage and the comparison I would make is a couple dancing to the Fields of Athnery - just my opinion (and I am a huge fan of Ola's)
