New TV - Advice on Sony or Panasonic

I'm looking at getting a new decent HD TV but don't want to pay for unnecessary functions - do I need 100Hz etc.

As my viewing distance is about 9 ft - I think this means a 32'' or 37''. From the posts here, it seems Sony or Panasonic are the way to go and at this size a good LCD is my best option

I would use the TV for SD on cable eg sport, films etc, some HD via Virgin media V+ and pre- recorded DVDs including region 1, and DVDs from my 3 yr old Pioneer 420H Recorder. I do not use games or have a HD recorder - not until situation settles.

Any advice on how these models fit the bill - not 1080p but I'm not sure I need it?

Panasonic TX32LXD70, TX32LXD700, TXL32LMD70,
TX37LZD70

Sony KDL32D3000, KDL32V2000, KDL32V3000

Will any of these upscale my current DVDs or do I need a new recoder - possibly from a home cinema system?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Hi I just got a PANOSONIC TH42-Px70 plasma and it is a excellent tv.I sit about 1.5-2 metre's away from it with no problems. If you buy a panosonic from an authorised dealer before the end of the month you get a free 5 year warranty with it.

I'd vouch for the Panasonic too. I have a slightly earlier TH42PX60 Plasma. I'd recommend Plasma instead of LCD if you're using mostly SD sources.

Check with the vendor but the TV should upscale automatically from your DVDs. An upscaling DVD player for around £50 will put out a HDMI signal and do a fractionally better job of upscaling than the engine built into the TV.

Happy shopping.

Thanks for the advice. They are good sets but I think I would struggle to fit a 42 inch into the space available. As a non-techie person, I am also worried about screen burn if I get the settings wrong on a plasma.
cheers

Screen burn on plasma is a load of scaremongering anti LCD rubbish - forget it.

Panasonic do a 37" plasma.

Also Panasonic have recently introduced a 37" LCD bit pricey but must be something extra if Panny have decided to go LCD at this size? Have always personally preferred Panasonic kit to Sony - more professional feel and not usually as overpriced as Sony kit.

I think this may be the TX37LZD70 - Seems to be 1080p plus other features such as better processing of films etc. Quoted at about £860. Sure it's good but is it that much better than the others an dis it good value?
