500,000:1 contrast Samsung TV

I have just noticed Samsung are now doing a 500,000:1 contrast 52" LCD screen.

I know contrast ratios are often a bit dodgy because of the way different companies work them out etc, but even if samsung are a bit out, say 10% out, it is still miles better than any other.

I would think samsung mesure the contrast the same across all their TVs, I thought Samsungs 15,000:1 contrast TVs were good!!!! I cant wait to see one.

Have you seen one?
Am i getting over excited?
Is it worth converting to LCD from Plasma?

1 problem I have found is that its an 8ms response time, i would hope for 4ms or 2ms.

Most companies lie and just tell you the Dynamic range which is like a cheating way out than telling you the true Contrast Ratio. Still it seems pretty damn high. I also agree, it would be nice to see a 4ms or even a 2ms Response time screen, and that's Black to Black, NOT Grey to Grey, another cheat method companies use.

this is dynamic contrast, but so are most other TV specs.

I really want to see what it is like.

Not for such an imaginary specification, it's doubful you would see any difference - and (just to make the plasma lovers happy!), I doubt it would have as good a blacks as a Plasma!.

Samsung contrast specifications are wildly over valued compared with other sets, and using 'dynamic values' instead of normal ones vastly over exaggerates the numbers even further.

It's like computer speaker systems, advertised as 1000W or 2000W, yet it's powered by a wall wart that says '10W maximum' on the back - and if you take the speakers out they say 2W or 3W on the back of them.

Again, don't go wildly chasing specifications, look at the sets, and see if YOU think it's worth it.

I know the 500,000:contrast seems a bit far fetched and could be gathered using an odd test, but as i said how far out can it be compared to other samsung TVs?

I would think a 15,000:1 samsung is about the same as a 10,000:1 panasonic. But 500,000:1 should be better.

I really wanna have a look to see what i is really like.

By all means have a look, but don't spend any money on it!. I would imagine it's very little, or not at all, different to the previous Samsungs? - just a way to con gullible customers.

yes but if they are selling one TV with 15,000:1 contrast and one TV with 500,000:1 contrast the one with 500:000 contrast MUST be better.

Samsung or any other company CAN'T con customers.

It need not be better, contrast is only one factor and improving one part of a displays specification may make anothe part worse. The same is true of resolution, a display with a higher resolution is not always better and may well even be worse.

Exactly - some people are so gullible, and that's EXACTLY who Samsung are targetting!

Everything else may make the display worse but there is no doubt the contrast MUST be better.

It is illegal for samsung to say one TV has higher contrast than another.

Forget all the other spec I am talking about contrast only.

Plenty of doubt! - it's called 'marketing' - a technical term for 'downright lying' .

Why would you think that? - they are specifying it in a completely different way, that's all. Do they specifically say it has a higher contrast ratio than another specific set?.

Considering there are loads of audio systems advertised as 1000W+ when they are only 10W or less, and they seem to have no problems.
