I have been with BT for my landline for over 10 years. I do not have broadband or any other service with them.

I find I am just using my mobile phone only now so the landline is no longer needed.

If I contact BT do I have to give a notice period to cancel the line completely or can it be done instantly?

And and what point should I cancel my direct debit to BT?

Many thanks.

Steve

If I remember correctly it's either 14 or 30 days but you can pay a fee to cease the line then & there. Stop your direct debit once they've worked out how much money your due back - remember you pay in advance so you'll get a credit.

You could transfer your number to a VoIP service - then pay just a couple of a quid a month and have the number going to voicemail, for example.

Phone 0800800880, cancellations can be done immediately but 14 days rental will be charged.

Bank DD credit took six working days after calling requesting repayment. Final bill was dated 3 working days after the phone call so I would say it should be sorted around a week after your line stops receiving incoming calls....but not that straight-forward in my experience.
