PTT in the UK?
Is there any way to get PTT in the UK?
A lot of phones have the buttons there and mention it on the menu, why don't the networks switch it on? I think Orange did it, but then it all went quiet. How does it actually work, you select the person you want to PTT and then you can talk to them live? or do you record a message then then gets delivered quickly? Can you cross network PTT? Is any UK supplier (even non network) offering this in any form? Why couldn't the iphone be the first to bring this to the UK and be implemented into O2, surely this would have given it some extra UK buzz. |

Orange are the only ones offering this service. Its aimed at business customers. Leicestershire Police use it as a back up service when Airwave plays up. It wont work cross network. I don't know if they are still selling PTT handsets. The Treo 600 does PTT.
The iPhone is missing more than enough standard features that cheap pay as you go phones do without adding to the list. |

T-mobile used to offer PTT, but it didn't take off in this country. If you have a good data plan you could use something like Agile Messenger for series 60, Windows Mobile etc.

PTT over cellular (PoC) actually utilises GPRS data packets to send the ecrypted audio to the selected individual (or group) of recipients.
Until recently this facility was single network only, as it is in the US. (Americans apparently use ptt much as we do texting here in the UK.) A company has now set up multiple servers to allow full cross network ptt functionality. I'm not sure of cost implications, but would probably involve GPRS data payment to your carrier and a fee of some type to the 3rd party provider. Take a look at pushtotalkphones.co.uk |

yes, the Americans like PTT. Their equivalent of txt messaging.
I used to have PMR446 radios which are basically the same as this service except it didnt have the phone function. For some reason the Brits dont like PTT....yet? |

I don't think its a case we don't like it because most of us haven't tried it as no ntwork other than orange supports it.

Why would we need PTT in the UK?
If people used the search feature there is a reason why it's so popular in the us and not here in the UK! |

T-Mobile used to do it, they even had charges capped at no more than £1 a day. But no-one used it.

wills**01: yes, the Americans like PTT. Their equivalent of txt messaging. PMR446 are a totally different concept wills. They are very short range, whereas Poc can be used wherever you have GPRS coverage which is now a LARGE portion of the UK. It also works internationally, although international data calls would probably push up the cost.I used to have PMR446 radios which are basically the same as this service except it didnt have the phone function. For some reason the Brits dont like PTT....yet? I think at the moment it's aimed more at business users. They're the ones who invariably need live group conversations. If someone in Edinburgh made a call, all his group would hear and be able to join in the conversation wherever they were. New York, Rome, Barcelona, Manchester, Birmingham, etc. They can also all be on different networks, even foreign ones! The size of groups is effectively unlimited. A pc can also be used as a contact point instead of a phone. Quote:

As I said in my original post neo, this system is "cross network" Tmobile,Orange, Vodafone, etc. This is better than the US system as I believe theirs is single network only. Visit: pushtoexperience.com to read more about it. I don't believe Intechnology (the above site) deal direct, so you'll probably have to contact one of their dealers to get pricing info. Try pushtotalkphones.co.uk |

True, it is a national service. I personally think its a great idea but get the feeling that it will never take off.
Nobody seems to be promoting it. |

I have a Nokia N82 and im on Orange, it has no PTT software on it even though its capable so im thinking Orange removed it because they dont support it? I actually did not know Orange even had it for a while or im sure i would have tried it to say the least. Initially i thought it was a Phone feature essentially being a walkie talkie but that's too good to be true.
