I just purchased this set for the kitchen.
Got it from QVC (introductory offer) £299.

On the plus side:

Easy to set up (scanned for both analogue and digital channels without probs)

Sensitive tuner

Integrated DVD player & SD card reader (very handy).

More than adequite sound quality for kitchen use. But don't expect audiophile quality.

Excellent remote.

Comprehensive connections (HDMI, PC, Scart, etc.)

Lots of adjustable picture settings.

The only negative I have found is the limited vertical viewing angle.

I keep the tv on top of a tall fridge. Picture is fine whilst I'm standing up but quickly darkens when sitting down at the table.

This means that I will need to get an adjustable bracket in order to tilt it down (£20 from Ebay).

All in all, a competent tv if mounted in such a way to compensate for the limited viewing angle (vertical more than horizontal).

Note that this model is also available under other brand names (Goodmans), so don't rely on the Grundig name.

Also, the choice of small screen tv's with integrated freeview is growing all the time (at the same price range).

Unless you specifically need the extra bells and whistles (integrated SD, DVD), check out other models for better vertical viewing angle.

Specifically on sound: I tried The Matrix dvd on it and was able to raise the sound level 3/4 of the way up without any distortion (didn't go any higher). Don't expect loads of bass but I found the quality more than adequite for my intended use.
There is, however, a Digital output for connection to an external amp. Very handy.

Do you need to have a DVD integrated with the TV though or are you after just a TV?

Personally I would never suggest buying a TV with an inbuilt DVD player (of ANY make) - it's almost certain the DVD will fail before the TV does.

Also, don't be fooled by the name, Grundig went bust a number of years ago, the name is now used by a consortium of Beko/Alba - so presumably it's really a Beko with a better badge and a bigger price?.

However, if you've got your mind set on a combined TV/DVD?, and that price is what you're looking for?, then it's probably as good as any out there.

If he is only five you could always just get a cheap CRT set (second hand, ebay has loads) and a £20-30 DVD player.

Means you don't have to chuck the whole lot away if the DVD knackers.

cheers for the replies
i don't want a crt
he oly as a very small box room and there is no where to put a tv really.
i am going to put it on the wall out of the way from small fingers.

if any can help me to decide if it worth paying the extra for a grundig
i have heard wharfedale can have psu problems

The Wharfedale would suit you just as well and save you some money.

Put the extra £50 to some DVD's or another toy.

They may well be the same set?, both are just cheap units bought in and badged.

AFAIK Grundig and Alba are Vestel supplied Brands as are Wharfedale, Bush, Goodmans, Luxor, Finlux etc. Whereas Beko although of Turkish origins like Vestel is a totally separate entity.

Not that I would make any quality distinction on this basis but it is probable that BEKO brands are from a different source than Vestel.
