I cant get a bt line connected into my flat as refuse to pay the £126 charge. I use virgin broadband and want a cheap voip service i can use a normal phone with.
What companies is best that can use a normal phone. I only have a standard black virgin modem so what is compatible with that.
suggestions please.

If you are already with Virgin then your best bet is 2 for £20

See here

You are already paying at least £17 anyway?

To answer your question though I use Sipgate.co.uk with a Linksys Pap2. This is reliable and there are no charges for a local number and no minimum credit. You do need to top up with £10 though.

I set this up intending to cancel my line with Virgin only for them to do a deal so my line rental is effectively £2 a month.

I am asking as Refuse to pay BT the £126 they want for pressing a button to activate my line.
I use virgin cable broadband but as I live in a towe block they only installed the broadband and NOT the phone lines so thats not an option.
The only option I have is VOIP.
I have looked at vonage and that seems good with free unlimited calls, but what other options are out there. the information online is very confusing and no real yae or nae for any particular company.
Some say vonage is expensive but what options do I have. i would want something i can connect my phone into and not a pc based voip.

www.draytel.org is one idea.

Strange that they only installed broadband.

When I lived in a tower-block (14th floor) cable had TV, broadband and phone installed. (I actually enjoyed living in the block and being so high up, lovely large rooms - large kitchen, large bathroom, large living room, large bedrooms, bigger than the houses we've had).

There's draytel mentions above and Sipgate and www.voiptalk.org/reallyvoip and www.orbtalk.co.uk

There's VoIPDiscount, VoIPStunt and some other Betamax services. These might not issue you local number, but you can get a number for free and point it at the service so you can receive calls on the number and you can set the service up to send out the verified number as the CLID.

I use a PAP2 ATA with VoIPStunt.

I was VoIP only for over 2 years, but Virgin offered me the phone line installed free and no monthly charge for it. OK in reality I'm paying for it in a way, just not the full price as I'm getting a discount on my package which discounts my whole package which effective discounts, the phone 100%, the TV and broadband.

I do have a local number issued by VoIPStunt, but since having a land line I have it send out that number instead.

There other providers I forget at the moment.

Here is one that you can check out, www.freespeech.co.uk, not sure if they are compatible with your modem though.

A really expensive 0844 number rather than a standard geographic number? I think not.
