I have to admit that I didn't like Maks last year with Laila. I thought the choreography was a bit naff and Maks seemed to be the definition of male bimbo, all brawn and absolutely no brains whatsoever.
Boy have I changed my mind. I have enjoyed Mel and Maks as much as any couple on either DWTS or SCD. The choreo is great and Maks is really bringing out the best in Mel who for her rumba and paso definately deserved straight tens. I think Laila's very dominant personality didn't allow Maks to shine at all. Laila is a 5ft 11, 165lb boxer with no formal dance training. Mel is 5ft5 probably 30-40lbs lighter, formally trained dancer with years of dance and performance experience. Maks just simply wouldn't have been able to show the same creativity with Laila. |

I think he was intimidated by her sheer physical presence. Mel is much shorter in stature and more inclined to listen, plus ofcourse she's used to taking direction and dancing.
Her dance training has been a huge benefit though. |

As a trained dancer Mel would be used to direction in dance but I’d disagree that in general she listens or takes direction well. Maks has repeatedly said himself that Mel lacks focus and gets distracted.
Her dance training has been a huge benefit though. |

The whole thing about mel having dance experience is getting really boring for me, how many celebs have been to stage school or acted or been fit been sporty and so used to the riggers of dance traing that the programme requires, or even been confident, it all counts.
Mabe they need to revise the types of celebs allowed to take part and get rid of anyone who might find that because of their past experience that they take to it all too easily, i think in strictly that would rule out, jill, zoe, emma, colin, denise, mark, darren, matt d,matt di, etc As well as those who you'd expect to do well, but don't eg, patsy p, Micha etc. |

I knew that alot of folk are making a huge deal of her dance experince. As for the type and extent of her training, that, i
just found out from you. If a comparison is to be made between Mel and Laila it's obvious dance training is to come up. Don't you think? |

And Maks's choreography, which is hugely better for Mel. He didn't always utilize Laila's natural talents, especially in that godawful Freestyle. I think she was capable of so much more, she had a natural elegance and rhythm that he could've used alot more.

She went to a performing arts school and worked as a dancer when she was younger. Also in the Spice Girls she would have had training dancing to choreography.
(.....not that I'm knocking her, I don't mind celebs who have had dance training) Not exactly the same disciplined and intricate type of dancing as latin and ballroom I can assure you. |

I agree I think most Brits have an understanding of the different types of people in America! You only have to look at their celebrities and you can see the difference:
Britney compared to Paris for example, both young party girls, but one more refined than the other! Same as over here if you compare say Kerry Katona with Tess Daly! Neither are English Rose but despite both being rich and famous you can tell they come from different backgrounds! It seems odd and quite ignorant that the Americans can't see the differences in us! I think most do see the difference. There are always going to be those in every country and walk of life who like to generalize, but that's their loss. Personally, I kind of adore Mel and her exuberance. Based on the little I know of English accents hers doesn't come across even close to posh, but there's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't have much to do with the quality of a person imo. |

Ofcourse Heather had a North-East accent, a bit further up from Mel, and her accent didn't seem to create as many waves. I think the Leeds accent especially is a bit quirky probably for American ears who haven't heard it before, in that it elongates vowels, like "Noooo", rather than the usual clipped upper class vowels they're used to hearing from the likes of Sarah Ferguson on TV over there.
I agree with you Sari, I think overall Mel has come across as happy go lucky and lighthearted, and quite different from her previous image of a moody Spice Girl. She must've had a whirlwind romance/marriage with Stefan though, as Angel Iris is only 6 months old, born in April, and as we know, the Father was a previous boyfriend. |

I admire how well Mel seems to be doing. The Spce Girls stuff must be taking up quite a lot of her time so I admire her determination to still do well in the dancing as well.

Maks was on E! News tonight (repeated at 11pm).
Apparently he's in a feature in the current issue of OK magazine. There's a full-page photo of him, wearing just a towel. Samantha Harris was on the set of DWTS, flashing this picture around, to show all the other dancers, and to get their reactions. (I didn't catch their replies). |
