Basically, you would have to ban 99.9% of actors/actresses because if they have been to stage school they will have done dancing to some degree as part of their training.
Yes, I can definitely see that with performers. And some people say that athletes have an advantage because they are used to training and tend to take criticism better than performers so they survive longer.

However, this year ABC has two contestants who have extensive training Melissa and Shawn. Melissa has 16 years of ballet and is on dance team out of Dallas so there is a lot of controversy on the ABC boards feeling she has an unfair atvantage. I am not sure where I sit on this issue because in some ways I think her ballet is hurting her - everything she does looks like balletic and Lens points this out. Now Bruno lusts after her and her legs. Go figure. I also like Tony and am glad that he has a young talented partner this season.

The network was in a bind and needed someone who could learn a waltz in 2 days and since Melissa had dance experience and was just coming off the very popular Bachelor show it must have seemed like the perfect choice for them. I read that she only had 6 hours to decide if was going to do the show. Then she had only 2 days to get ready for the show.

But it does seem very unfair to celebrities like Gilles and Ty who have no experience whatsoever. Gilles is a natural dancer and Ty struggles but they are both coming in learning from scratch.

Lil Kim has some hiphop and again she brings those moves in and they seem to hurt her. Shawn of course does spectacular athletic flipping but she needs to be judged on dancing. I do think she picks up choreography very quickly because she is a minor and must take Wednesday off so she loses a full day of training.

I don't know where they can draw the line with ringers. There is always someone who comes in and has a distinct advantage over the other dancers. And they don't always win the competition.

What an interesting post - thank you for so much information we don't get over here in the UK.

I had no idea about Shawn having training restrictions or that Melissa had such extensive ballet experience. I wondered if Lil Kim had done a little ballet as she has some beautiful lines.

As you say it is so hard to say where the line should be drawn.

Shawn having to take one day off a week doesn't stop her doing extra hours on the other days to make up, which, as she doesn't actually work, shouldn't be a problem, and her athletic training should certainly give her the fitness level and stamina to cope with extra training, as opposed to some of the less fit, and older contestants.

The show did say right from the start that Melissa had had extensive ballet training, and I think it shows, as her technique - especially with the Latin dances - is very poor. Latin should be weight down into the floor through the ball of the foot (a good Latin dancer will wear out his/her shoes from the inside of the shoe out if the pressure is right)' Melissas' weight it all carried too high, and consequently her feet tend to slip all over the place, and seem surprisingly weak.

But what could the show do? If they had chosen someone with no dance experience at all, what they would have achieved in 2 weeks may well have looked so bad that she would virtually be guaranteed to be first out - and that wouldn't have been fair.

I think dwts and scd should do what they do for Dancing On Ice - and have a couple of replacements lined up, and who start training alongside the others. If someone drops out before the show begins, the replacements are ready to step in; if not, they are often given a chance to appear in the show proper the following year. Either way, they get paid very well!!!!!!!

I'm more of a lurker about DWTS but just wanted to say that in the contracts I believe her being a minor also limited her to 5 hours training a day for 6 days or similar, ie. she couldn't even work lots of hours on "working days". But I think her learning routines for gymnastics has helped her pick them up quicker and means the disadvantage isn't as bad as it could be.

I must admit I don't think it would be much of a disadvantage for Shawn as she picks things up so quickly and is very fit (she is very like Louisa Lytton in this respect imho) - plus she will have the discipline of an athlete.

5 hours "official" training at the regulated studios, but who is going to know if they sneak off and hire a little hall somewhere and carry on practising on their own? Or even have a large enough room in her home? (There's a lot of dance practice that can be done in a small area).

Have to agree with Force Ten - time to go LT BUT I'd have given him an extra point for the dress he designed for Edyta - at last she's covered up and the colours were great!

I liked it too. The colours really suited her. I also like the dress Chelsea wore, although she did say she helped Ty a little with the design, the colour was lovely.

So glad Ty had a better dance this week; but he always looks so nervous when he goes up to the judges for their critique. I love his dry sense of humour.

It was great wasn't it. Especially the start... It'll be a shame if Melissa goes out. I'd rather see Chuck go but it's anybody's guess who's out this week.

LOL! Only watched Ty and Chelsie so far - and then voted for them on the DWTS site!

I hope Chuck goes home and Ty lives to fight one more day!

When you view the tango encore watch the beginning carefully right before the dance. Bruno does a memorable move. Really the highlight of the night.

Do you mean the bit at 6.42 on the first clip? You can't really see what he's doing with Ty's shirt at the very beginning of the clip - unless he's burying his head in it lol.

contains spoilers relating to Week 8

Spoiler

Gilles is a sure fire winner and deservedly so if the public vote as they ought to - but I seriously doubt he entered the show with no dancing experience, he's just too good.

Also my wife has developed this annoying habit of drooling every time he performs very off putting now I get no Smirnoff to watch

Couldn't see the point of the 'celebrity endorsement' thingys' Just a time filler, and quite irritating - especially the one with Julianne and Chuck.

They were a spoof on American commercials for on-line dating but it did not really work that well.

This week "Dance Center" will be back with Kenny Mayne, Jerry Rice and Len making commentary. That is always funny and this year they have some good celebrities to make fun of.

As much as I'd love to join in the hoots-and-hollers at Bruno, he really doesn't sniff Ty's shirt. He picks it up and then 'offers' it to the group of women diagonally across the dance floor. Slightly earlier you can see them all clapping and cheering when the shirts come off.

I realised they were "spoofs", but still a waste of time - as is the "Dance Center" - hated that when they've done it before. Better to stick in a few more adverts!!!
