Penny and Ian's dance too fast
Paace
12-11-2007
Did Ian make a big mistake on Sat in choosing such a fast tempo number for their Salsa. Seeing as Penny struggles with Latin, the tempo of that dance would be suitable for a pro and not a beginner. Anton chose a number about half that speed.

Penny did say that they asked to the tempo to be brought down a bit so maybe they were planning to do it slower?

I thought it was much too fast. Still, from what I've gathered from back before the series started, I think they had to put their music choices in like end of August or something, so possibly before they know who they'd be dancing with. Even so, it wasn't a good choice. I love Ian to bits, but I think he's taken one or two chances this year that haven't paid off. I think some of the pros play the risky strategy to get the 'wow' factor, but are in danger of pushing it too far. Shame, 'cos in the past it's paid off and he's done some fantastic routines.

It is a shame because she could actually move very well, and get her hips going in the Latin, but the rhythm on Saturday was far too fast to show her off to best advantage. It was a huge loss to have a celeb leave who clearly loved it so much.

I doubt that is altogether true. How was Kenny able to get them to do Flower of Scotland?

The dance wasn't choreographed by Ian ... as he's made sure to tell people at every single opportunity! ... it was choreographed by the world Salsa champions ...

... was definitely too fast for Penny though!

Listening to Ian on ITT tonight I got the impression that he thought they would have gone much further and was keeping the best dances for later. I think the two salsa champions helping them were not appreciative enough of the height thing. A speed that would have been O.K. for them wasn't for Penny and Ian.

Someone who'd been to a lesson with him posted on DS before they started training for this series, that he'd said he'd put in all his music choices. There was a lot of discussion at the time about how it all worked, and I think the pros submit what they want well in advance and the BBC then say yes or no. It was thought that they put in several choices as the BBC can veto a particular song. I think in series 3 the 'circus' music Zoe hated so much for their Paso was his third choice or something. That's what I've been told. Maybe they can ask for a change nearer the time.

Anyone else know different?

I reckon Jackie and Chris were getting their revenge on Ian for his messing about in the series 3 group salsa training. Chris did have to yell at him to shut the f*ck up!

Nicole Cutler has changed her facebook status today to 'Nicole is looking for a great tango song'. Cutting it a bit fine?!

Somebody shouted at the lovely Ian? ... might have to have words! ... that must have been quite funny actually ... Chris is about half Ian's size!

Quite frankly their choreo hasn't been up to much this entire series. The boys/pros group dance was a total insult, and the only Salsa that really worked for me on Saturday was John & Nicole's. How disappointing to go out when you, as the pro (Ian) were not really in charge of proceedings.

I also had the impression during the week that they were confident of doing well with the salsa. They seemed pleased with their training and probably expected to get good scores on Saturday. What a shame their hopes were dashed. Not surprised Penny was so tearful.

Must have been hard for them both ... can't believe just how fast that dance was though ... they had very little chance of looking composed doing that!

Another good reason to not bother with the salsa.

I'd rather see something like the jitterbug instead even if there are similarities to the jive.

I could do without the salsa too. Most of the pros have had to learn it so it rather defeats the object of the show.

I thought all the salsas were really poorly choreographed - only had to remember Karen and Mark's last year to think how good it could be.

They were all too fast and done to too fast tempos.

thats the thing salsa is fast - and antons wasnt fast it was a crawl

Dont think there has ever been a really good really authentic salsa on the series

I thought it was far too fast for her. He looked great - but in constrast Penny couldn't keep up and looked clumsy. A slightly slower tempo would have been far more successful.

I think Penny can move well enough to do latin, but her legs are not strong enough. Arlene said 'there is no excuse, Ian is tall and he can do it.' but he has the leg strength to move them fast.
Until Penny could build a lot of strength, the speed of latin would be a problem.
Her legs look good, just aren't strong enough at the moment.

Interesting comment from Ian on Five Live this morning..."Neither of us had heard the song before".

Does that mean that Chris and Jackie chose it?
