Is it a dancing competition or just a popular personality parade?”

Just because you can vote in advance of the dancing doesn't mean every early vote takes no account of dancing skill. If I voted now, I could take into account the person's dancing up to this point. So voting all week does not mean it is just popularity and not about dancing.

Nice theory, but just plain wrong!

I reckon the result would end up by being far more representative of what people actually want.

With the current system, if I want Kate to leave I have to register a vote for every other person and I'm not likely to do that.”

That's a great idea! It would create a fairer playing field and more accurately reflect the publics opinion but also, raise buckets more for Children in Need! Perfick.

I disagree with you - I think phoning during the week isn't representative of the dancing. We've seen how one person can improve dramatically from one week to the next - if you're voting before you've even seen them, then you don't have all the information and then can't be giving un an unbiased vote.

BUT, the point is, it's OK to be biased. That's why voting during the week, in my opinion, is fine. It raises more money for charity, and despite what some people have written on here, I think most people understand it's a popularity contest, with a load of dancing thrown in -- and it's been proven with the whole Kate thing. Whether it should be a dance contest rather than a popularity contest, is a whole new question, and in reality, a whole new TV show. Given that most of the GBP are not dance specialists, if you wanted it to be a proper dance competition then you wouldn't let us vote at all - we'd just have the judges.

But then that doesn't make great TV and bags of cash for charity and the Beeb.

Seem to have gone slightly off topic here.. sorry

Of course in reality people will vote on both dancing and personality, with everyone having a different split between the two.

The exciting thing about the show is you get to see people's personalities through their dancing and hence you're voting on a combination of the two.

I'm much less likely to vote for a really poor dancer but I did vote last year for Peter Schmeichel because his Samba just made me laugh. I'm afraid Kate doesn't make me laugh, she makes me want to hide!!!

I think, this is how the Final (for 3 dancers) will be decided.

Lets say dancer X won 3 points from judges and 2 points from phone votes.

Lets say dancer Y won 2 points from judges and 3 points from phone votes.

Both get a total of 5 points, but Y wins because phone vote takes precedence over judges' marks. Anyone disagree?

Theres no need to give the audience votes by number but it would be a good idea to see which order they have placed the couples. Of course the BBC won't do it because it would reveal the farce of the public's vote.

" Oooh I voted for X cos he was so manly"

Q ~ Should the public vote results be made known to the public ????

A ~ you bet your bottom dollar they should be. Especially in light of the hoohaa with phone in stuff (if kids are encouraged to vote to name a pet *Blue Peter* and even that is a swizz!!) then the results of a vote should most definately be made publlic (after the dance off) you never know it might encourage MORE people to vote ... not me however, I would never vote for anything .... sept maybe to get that awful woman Tess off my screeen !!

Given all that stuff, maybe it is worth re-asking this year, using FoI - it's certainly a reasonable argument.
