I have just moved house, and arranged for BT to transfer my landline and broadband over. There appeared to be no problem, they told me what my new number would be and the potential speed of my internet connection.

However, when I moved in over the weekend I searched high and low for a phone socket only to find there isn't one! I cannot even see where the line comes into the flat! I received my text from BT yesterday telling me that the line has been activated, and I have even rung my new number and it does ring.

If I were to call BT and arrange for a socket to be installed, does anyone know how long I would have to wait and how much it would cost? Surely if I already have the line I wouldn't need to pay anything?

Any ideas?

If an engineer has to come out to connect and fit a master socket there is standard charge of £124.99.

Do you see a telegraph pole anywhere? ... Can you see where neighbours cables come in?

Bit crazy BT enabling if there is no master socket!

you can either ring up BT orders and quoting your reference tell them that the line still isn't working yet and that you have no socket, they will then either build a job for us to come and get you working (quoting poss. charges) or tell you to report it as a fault, which the faults department will raise a job for us to visit (and again quote poss charges).
is it a new build? if so look for a grey covered box with grey trunking to the ground on the outside this is where our feed comes up and usually there is either a nte or blanking plate on the interior opposite. if your in flats could be our main feed is in a utility cupboard and you will definately need a visit. if it's just a regular house and your neighbours are fed by a pole and there is no dropwire to your property then again we will need to come out.

if the address previously had service, and the routing still existed on records they should test the line and it should test o.k, but sometimes with us lot tinkering in the network that routing can be going elsewhere which will have a socket on the end of it. though recently with the use of the new systems to make us all "equivlent" because it's easier and cheaper for the CP's to just start a line regardless if there's a socket on the end or not, we are getting more and more provides coming through as faults. which alot of the engineers don't bother raising charges on. but that is now starting to change.

Right, managed to get through to BT last night and they tested the line. They said there was a fault with the line outside the property and that an engineer would come this morning to resolve it. He said that he will put a note on the query so that the engineer also fits a master socket while he is here.

Sounds great, now just have to wait for him to turn up!
