PC Connecting to tv AND Monitor

I have a pc hat i want to connect to both a digital tv and a monitor. I can do this using a split cable but if both are plugged in the monitor loses a little focus and brightness.
Its a CRT monitor so if i swapped to a tft would this still happen?
If its going to happen regardless of the monitor type is there another way to connect both without having to unplug the cable from the tv?

Thanks for any help.

ps. hope this is the right forum.

Might be worth looking at upgrading the graphics card to one with two monitor outputs. That should give equal quality on each and give the benefit of extended desktop mode.

I had a feeling that might be the best solution, was hoping not to have to buy another graphics card but i was hoping for a lazy, non too expensive fix.

Thanks for your thoughts though
