PAL in the USA

Not sure if this is quite the right place to ask this, but I can't think where else to put it!

I have been asked to send a DVD to USA. Normally I would produce a PAL, Region 0 disc but I could burn a NTSC version instead (I have it already converted on the PC).

Now, as I understand it, a PAL one would play on his PC but not on his DVD player & TV. Is this correct? In which case I should send him a NTSC copy so he has the option.

Seeing as hardly anything in the States is multi-region or PAL compatible, it would be safest to burn a region 0 NTSC copy. The septics don't seem to realise that there is a whole world out there that is not the same as the good ol' US of A. The World Series Baseball only has teams in it from America. They've never heard of scart leads either...

I agree, do him an NTSC version then he can play it on anything.

You can thank our French friends for the SCART (Peritel) connector - a real "jack of all trades"!.

You've missed a big point there Broadz. The World Series is called The World Series as it was sponsored by The World newspaper.

Ahh...I see. Still a bit big-headed of them though.

Yes, I didn't realise that either - but why is it 'The World' newspaper?

Presumably because it reports news from the whole world, ie. America... I'd heard that too. On QI, i think!

Thanks, that's as I suspected. I'll knuckle down & burn an NTSC one instead of sending a PAL one off the shelf then.

Many cheap DVD players ($20) can convert PAL DVD's to NTSC on the fly. When I lived in the States I had a Cyberhome one that did just that.

But it's safer to burn an NTSC disc as this will guarantee compatibility anywhere.

NTSC = Never Twice Same Colour
PAL = Picture Always Lovely
