Sub oofer position

I know the position of a subwoofer is not supposed to be critical, but how about between the rear speakers of my home cinema system (hidden behind my sofa) out of sight of my wife?
Just noticed the missing W.

hy not? The positioning doesn't make any odds - you don't notice where the deep bass of the sub-woofer is coming from, as most of it is directed from the woofer down to the floor anyway, then from the floor spreads out across the whole room.

Just noticed my missing w too.

Yes, it's fine anywhere - below a certain frequency you can't get any directional information from it.

If only it was as easy to hide the other 5 speakers from my wife!!

Although the sub can be anywhere in the room there should still be some thought put into it.

If you make it too enclosed then the sound will be boomy ,for example if you stick it in the corner where the celing slopes down.

How the sound travels in relation to the floor if you force it there also depends on the floor.

Floorboards will react differently to concrete and whether you are carpeted also makes a difference

I know that feeling!

When I began setting-up our system, she asked what all those 'boxes' were for.

She was less than impressed when I told her.

If you find a way of hiding them - let me know!

Centre speaker fits into our £1200 unit that has a cloth cover designed for a speaker and the sub is an MJ Acoustics one with wooden finish that sits under a nest of tables and its impossible to tell its a speaker

The other 5 are on stands and poke out just above the back of the settee and 2 chairs but thats as inconspicuous as I can get them

I'm having a new wooden floor layed, and the fitters are hiding the speaker wires for me. Last night while watching a dvd on tv without the surround speakers my wife said
" Now, isn't that better"!!!

I hit upon a stroke of luck with my speakers; my wife was very against the idea until I showed her the Kef 3001 system. At this point she was pushing me into buying them! why? quite simply because they are Cute!!!

One other point to note is the cable used for the sub. I positioned mine with about a 25' cable run to the other side of the room. Being a skinflint I used cheap cable which did not have sufficient screening so a 50Hz mains hum was induced on the line. Not only did I get a loud hum from the sub, because the signal was being induced continuously the sub never switched itself off.
