mega-cheap 1080p wharfedale - any good?
fastest finger

I've seen (what appears to be) the bargain of the century.. a 1080p 42" LCD for £499. It's by Wharfedale on sale at Agros, but I get the sneaky suspicion this is all far too good to be true. Can't find any reviews or any specs that show the response rate (important to me as i play a lot of games).

Anyone got any experience with this TV?

It will be good, if you don't watch TV on it or like TV that looks like a VHS tape.

For £500 I'd go with a Panasonic TX-32LMD70

Only 32", but its processing kicks the shit out of that Wharfedale.

I'm inclined to agree with you. There has to be some cost cutting in there somewhere, gonna have to be the picture processing, or worse, poor quality connectors.

Is this the same TV, have they made a mistake?

Thanks for the help.

That's the one, but no info anywhere on the LCD panels response time, and no reviews commenting on how it handles scaling SD images to fit that screen. None of the stores I have visited have a working model on display.

£500 is to attract suckers, don't fall for it.

you need to remeber that yes you will be watching SD pictures just now, but what in the future?

ps3 and x-box will use 1080p

sky at 1080i is not far behind, 720 a bit worse

you could use upscalers for dvd

unless nigel knows if this is re-badged

Yes it's just a cheap badged set, probably a Vestel one?.

Wharfedale don't manufacture TV's, they just badge them - rather like Goodmans, another old speaker manufacturer now selling badged TV's.

But then the Panasonic is only 1366x920 ish....where the Wharfedal is 1920x1020ish

Unless you're sitting pretty close (closer than most would) then the extra resolution makes no difference.

Since the Panny is 32" then the pixel size at the same distance is similar anyway. The Panny will almost certainly give the better picture it depends whether anyone is willing to sacrifice PQ for size (lots will).

Maybe, but Argos are now doing an Acoustic Solutions 40' 1080p TV for £450:

I was tempted to get the Wharfedale 37 1080p
looked a fair price £499 with a 3 year warranty,
looking at the thread on the 47 inch on avforums
the panel is either LG or Chimei. If you could guarantee
on getting an LG panel would look a good deal going on
the price of LG models.I wonder what panels are in the
Acoustic Solutions at least with argos you can return it if its
a load of rubbish lol although fairly good reports on av thread.

@ ianco,

I have the Wharfedale 37" 1080p set, and looking in the service menu, it has an AU panel. I am not too sure but I believe that they do or at least did make lcd panels for Sony so that seems pretty good.

I can say that this is a very good set and everything seems to work well...... I use a PS3 to play bluray discs and the Wharfdale shows them in 1080p 24fps and very good it looks too.

I only have Sky SD at the moment, but the Wharfedale seems to cope with that very well producing a very watchable picture.

Finally I have noticed that people on a lot of forums seem unable to find out the refresh rate on these sets, however after a few phone calls I have found out that the refresh rate is 8ms........I have also not experienced any motion blur, even on the sports channels.

Altogether this seems to be a very good spec. set at a reasonable price, as borne out by the very long and complimentary thread about the Wharfedale (albeit a larger panel) on the AV forums site.

Hope this is of some help.

bishy.

Thanks bishy,I had been unable to find any feedback on
the 37 inch set.Instore it was £599 today but I think
still £499 online.Instore today it says available through
new catalogue on the 26th July.At the moment seems like
the 3 year warranty is no longer available but perhaps it
might be back on in the new catalogue and at a reduced
price.I seem to remember the 42 inch was £499 so if the
37 comes down in price might pick one up.

cheers
